HFH was founded in 2001 by a small group of dedicated healthcare workers to chronically ill clients to better health through the establishment of stable housing. Stable housing, we felt, was the first step to better health, medication compliance and an increased sense of dignity. HFH differs from other housing programs in the District by providing each resident with a fully furnished apartment. The beginning of independent living and problem resolution works best with each resident living in his/her own space! Dormitory style or communal living "“the premise upon which most transitional programs are based- does not set the foundation for independence or a sense of ownership, those ideas critical for self-worth and growth!
By providing independent living spaces to residents for 8-24 months depending on their need, we allow residents to comfortably find permanent housing, jobs or fulfill trainings. HFH provided over 4,954 nights of service for 2013. We have been successful in placing greater than 85% of our participants in permanent or long term supportive housing. An informal analysis shows that 79% of our clients remain in housing either working or in school one year post program completion. We believe our success is due in part to the dedication of the staff providing the services and the type of housing we provide. To date, we house (9) single adults and mothers with small children in four monitored buildings and support them with comprehensive case management and counseling.
Our Situation
HFH has worked hard to obtain financing through grants and private donors to maintain the ability to provide comprehensive case management, substance abuse recovery services and most importantly, apartments for displaced and homeless single and family based clients who are challenged with homelessness and chronic illnesses.
We are seeking funding for two campaigns. First, we would like to remodel a single family house we purchase to develop as an office and community service space. There we would provide trainings, computer services and a learning center not just for our residents but for the community at large. This will also allow us to open three new apartments for homeless victims immediately that presently serve as office spaces..
Secondly, we are striving to increase the number of living units available to clients who would ordinarily not be able to afford the rents in the present economy for suitable living arrangements.
It takes time to establish credit, employment and savings to move into your own apartment. We believe that we can make this happen with your help. By purchasing or lease apartment units, we can increase the number of homeless clients serve and move them to places of their own with the support of case management services, substance recovery services and mental health support.
Housing is a pivotal part of the everyday life that many of us take for granted. Homes for Hope looks to make housing an essential and available service for the homeless in a respectful and quality way
Our main campus of housing is in Southeast Washington. We will be working to expand services through the tri state area (Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia) and the District of Columbia.
With your help, we can make this happen!
I am soliciting this funding for Homes for Hope, Inc.to develop our space into a viable building and in turn, increasing housing units for the homeless. Cash is great but we will taking willing workers, too.
