To Study At Dream College

Donation protected
On the 24th of August myself and my mother did a Dance-a-thon (movement for 24hrs - without stopping) to raise funds to go towards a University place that has been offered in New York and L.A for a Musical Theatre course at AMDA (American Musical & Dramatic Academy). Although a scholarship was awarded the remaining amount is still beyond the family’s means. The minimum target amount, to cover this coming academic year is £40, 000 and a higher target of around £100, 000 to cover the duration of the course. If insufficient funds are raised this amazing opportunity would have to be turned down as the American Embassy needs to be able to know that the amount given by AMDA, is available to each student applying for a visa otherwise it is not issued, which means the individual is then unable to travel to the US to undertake their course.  Our names are Khalid Kerr and Abena Appiah-Kerr. Khalid is a humble young adult, who loves to take up challenges and opportunities thrown at him. He conducts himself in an appropriate manner in different environments; he is able to relate to people on a mature level. He endeavours to adjust himself to different environments to ensure that his full potential is achieved. He has been training in gymnastics for about 13 years and was very fortunate to gain a place on the Great Britain Team for Team Gym and Tumbling. From this he has been professionally coaching for the last 4 years, coaching children as young as 5, right through to adults at a high level. He has put together choreography incorporating gymnastic elements for performances and competitions that have been displayed nationally and internationally with most winning medals. He has been able to build up his professional training in singing, dancing and acting whilst attending The BRIT School finishing Year 13 this year with a triple distinction* (equivalent of 3 A*s) in Musical Theatre [Acting, Dancing and Singing] – this is despite struggling in primary school, identified as being severely dyslexic. Khalid also gained A/B in A-level dance (2017); this was done even though he had sustained a serious leg injury from the 2016 Team Gym competition. Abena is a mother of 4 and a grandmother, a Primary School Teacher started in the profession 20 years ago. She is extremely passionate about teaching and being in the classroom with a massive drive to get children to learn for life! She is active in the local community and has been a member of the Tenants and Residents Association for 25 years.  We live in South East London, Camberwell – an inner city area that unfortunately has had a number of knife and gun crime take place, as recent as less than a week ago. Khalid constantly observes the pain and hurt from young people as they feel their voices aren’t being heard, he has even written a musical about the hindrance of our wider community and how there are these restrictions that are suppressing young people, he is reaching out for this support in an effort to be the voice for the unheard youth and does not just want to be another wasted, talented, black young man who doesn’t see it pass 20 because he didn’t get the help he needed. To study performing arts further and leading to doing this as a profession would be beyond belief for Khalid, it will allow him to refine his technique further, to work with people who have the same artistic instincts/visions, as well as being able to feel the sparks of imaginative creativity. He believes pursuing further education in this field would allow him to achieve his goal of giving a voice to the youth and make it possible for him to grow more in confidence. He feels very strongly about the importance of the arts in today's society and its contribution to human well-being, as he believes society is as good as the art being produced. Khalid suggests that with the arts it is possible to effectively impact the world through creativity. Theatre has the ability to capture an audience and sweep it up into a story that essentially reflects the world that we live in today.  Thank you for your time. I hope you'd be able to spread the word and help in any sort of way possible,   Kind regards Abena & Khalid   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aD3kcmIh86Y  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3CFUyXnUCU  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qfev84gNDA0&index=10&list=PLR6AuUwvyunQIs1SqmWq2UherWdwoxRNQ  - Watch from 26 minutes (getting a bronze medal - the first for Team GB in this discipline at this level [Junior Men's Team])
