I teach at an urban school serving a low income area of Memphis, TN, so as you might imagine, the track & field budget is very limited. In fact, it will barely cover the buses for our scheduled track meets.
However, what our team lacks in money we make up for in determination. Our athletes run sprints on the sidewalk in front of the school, or laps around the dilapidated football field because we don’t have an actual track to practice on. A donation to our cause would purchase the equipment necessary for our athletes to compete on a level equal with other schools. For example, with a measuring wheel, we can mark accurate distances on the field for them to practice running. We also need a shot put, discus, starting blocks, batons, stop watches, and water bottles.
In the past our team has run in the football warmups (a spandex shirt and basketball length shorts). New track-specific uniforms (singlets and running shorts) would give our team the edge and confidence to excel at track meets.
Because of the area our athletes live in, they come to the starting line with certain disadvantages, but basic equipment should not be one of them. Your donation will make a huge difference in leveling the playing field for these 12 high school athletes (and those in years to come) and may launch them on a path to run track in college.
Here is a breakdown of where your donations will go:
Uniform tops: $13.60 each
Uniform bottoms: $15.60 each
(We can outfit our whole team for $350.40)
Shot put: $20
Competition discus: $40
Starting blocks: $76.29 each
(We plan on purchasing at least two for $152.58)
Four relay batons: $21.95
(The 4x400 and 4x800 are where these students shine)
Measuring wheel: $41.38
Two stopwatches: $15.90
Invitational track meets: entry fee $75 each
(We have four non-invitational meets already set in stone, but would love to enter at least two invitationals to give our athletes additional opportunities to qualify for the district and state championships)
Water bottles and carrier: $30
Our season officially started two weeks ago, and our first meet is scheduled for Thursday, March 17. We would like to order the equipment as soon as possible, hopefully by March 13, but we will happily accept donations throughout the season.
If we do not reach our goal of $900, we will purchase what we can from this list, starting with the most essential (measuring wheel, batons, shot put, and uniforms).
If we exceed our goal, we will put the extra money towards transportation to a track to practice on occasionally and additional invitational meets.
