Securing a future for Beth Jacob
Since 1908 the Beth Jacob Congregation ( www.bethjacobkw.ca ) located in Kitchener Ontario has been the focal point for Jewish life in South Western Ontario. We have a lovely building hosting a kosher kitchen, class rooms, auditorium, chapel and beautiful sanctuary. We are a traditional congregation that welcomes equally, Jewish people of all backgrounds and are in need of a creative Rabbi or spiritual leader who can re-energize our Jewish congregation. Our membership has just raised funds to pay off our obligations to the bank and enough money to do needed repairs to our beautiful building that will help make it more inviting to present and future members. Additionally, our members have agreed to a special assessment to help raise funds for a Rabbi or spiritual leader.
Never more so than the week following the horrific massacre in Pittsburgh has it become so clear to see that Jews around the globe need a foundation exactly like our shul. A place not only to pray, but to congregate and learn. A place to mourn the loss of loved ones and unfortunately a place to mourn atrocities committed against us....but to do so as a united and proud group. Most importantly, a place to celebrate and share in all the joys of being Jewish.
The objective of this fund raiser has many aspects. Yes, we need a new spiritual leader. Yes we need to continually repair aging infrastructure so the Jews in this community will always feel secure here, and have a respected place to turn to for their needs.
We owe this to our predecessors, who through their sacrifices gave us a solid Jewish foundation here in the region. Many of them lie in our beautiful Jewish cemetery which comes with its own financial needs that we must meet. Century old trees must now be taken down. Headstones of those who built this community are in dire need of restoration and/or repair.
Unfortunately we must also consider the financial costs to our security. We have always payed for a police presence during our high holy days but now we must consider more permanent options.
We, the congregants of Beth Jacob are doing our utmost to fund the expenditures mentioned above. In the past few years, many of our membership have moved to larger centers such as Toronto and Montreal, for school, work, or to be closer to the offspring that were sent there.....for school/work. We indeed see the potential for growth of our congregation, with an influx of Jews moving to the region due to the ever growing tech, medical, science, law and university sectors. We simply need some time and more importantly some financial assistance to get us there. Through this crowd funding, even the smallest donation possible can help us achieve our goal. Be it a large or small contribution, each and every one will be put to great use and received with our utmost, heartfelt thanks.
Again I cannot stress enough how much we owe this to those who have come before us but more importantly to our children and grandchildren so they can be prepared for what lies ahead.
