Hi! My name is Shameka S.L. Sawyer. I'm a Indie Filmmaker based in Philadelphia, PA. I have a deep love for documentaries and enjoy using film as catalyst to present perspectives that are different from the "mainstream". I really enjoy assisting those who are marginalized by society with using film as a voice. This is why I created the 5 Shorts Project. Since it's creation in 2013, the 5 Shorts Project has produced 20 shorts films. Next year we will hit 25 short films created by independent filmmakers.
I graduated from the University of Pennsylvania (Cum Laude) where I received my bachelors in Communication. Shout out to the School of Arts and Sciences (SAS)! Prior to Penn, I attended the Community College of Philadelphia where I graduated with highest honors with a degree in Communication - Theatre. I'm an alumna of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and the All USA Academic Team!
While at Penn, I decided to take some film courses to learn more about cinematography and video editing. This sparked my interest in creating a career in film. I realized that I wanted to make films, and I also wanted to help others who were interested in making films, but lacked the resourced and experience to do so. This is when I created the 5 Shorts Project - a project that assists aspiring filmmakers with creating a short film.
5 Shorts Mission
To provide resources - classes, funding, access to equipment, film distribution, to those who lack the resources to study film-making from a traditional provider (ie. colleges, universities, film schools).
5 Shorts Vision
To provide an inclusive environment for the production of films that speaks to diverse communities and empower the voices of those who are marginalized by society.

Our goal is to raise $5000 by September 2018 to help us to provide additional film and sound equipment, funding to cover expenses for film-making, and to provide a grant to assist with submission fees for film festivals for the participants.
Next year, we are planning to provide a summer film camp for teens. With your help, we'll be able to provide this camp for free to disadvantaged youth.
