Aid for Lombok Earthquake Victims

Dear Friends and Family,
On July 29th the island of Lombok in Indonesia was rocked by a magnitude 6.4 earthquake. Some homes and buildings were destroyed while many left standing were severely weakened and cracked. One week later a magnitude 7.0 struck causing the already damaged island to be majorly reduced to rubble. A quake of 6.2 was recorded again today making it now three major shocks in a week and a half. Since the original quake thousands of tremors and aftershocks have been felt keeping a blanket of fear over Lombok. The area around Mt. Rinjani, including Senaru Village, was hit extremely hard being close to the epicenter. The quakes also left major damages on the famous Gili Islands off Lombok's coast and were felt as far as Bali.
The numbers have been continually rising but some sources have recently reported nearly 350 deceased, 1400 injured, and as many as 200,000 people displaced and now homeless. There is an immediate need for emergency aid and there will be an ongoing need for aid and resources in the months to come.
For anyone who has ever been to the Lombok region, you might have traveled to the beautiful beaches of Gili Trawangan, or seen the spectacular views from atop Mt. Rinjani. Most of all you will have experienced the amazing hospitality and genuine kindness of the beautiful people who call this place home. These people now need your help!
We are Free and Easy Traveler, a Canadian based travel company, who has been bringing groups to Gili Trawangan, Senaru Village, and Mt. Rinjani for over 8 years now. Our groups have made lasting friendships with local trekking guides, porters, scuba divers, boat drivers, snorkeling guides, bartenders, and many others. It is very sad because not only have many of their homes been destroyed, a lot of them have now lost their main source of income, directly or indirectly with tourism being halted.
With any donations, we collect we will be dividing the funds between:
- Our friends at Trawangan Dive Center on Gili Trawangan who are actively on Gili T and Lombok providing relief to their friends and family who have been affected by this. You can read about their efforts here: https://www.facebook.com/TrawanganDive/
- Our friends in Senaru, who have made our Mount Rinjani treks possible for our groups. They have been hit extremely hard by these earthquakes and their houses and business have been left in ruins. Below is a picture they sent to us to thank us for our donations thus far:
Dusty, our Indonesia Operations Manager, will be withdrawing these funds on behalf of Free and Easy Traveler and sending them directly to the sources outlined above.
For now, we are going to see how much we can raise over the next week, so if anyone seeing this has a few dollars they can spare please donate.
