Dad was involved in an auto accident and is going to need long term care. Many friends and family have reached out asking what they can do to help. I thought I would help provide an opportunity for just that. He is at a hospital far from home and Mom is trying to stay by his side. The medical bills will pile up. There will be a need for therapy and lots of care.

We have a target date for taking Tom home of May 10 !! May 18 will be one year since the accident. Tom has a great attitude despite not regaining any useful movement of his hands, arms, legs or anything below his shoulders. He continues to fight infections, a stage four pressure sore, bowel and bladder issues, and needing to be cared for 24/7. We have been using a rented power wheelchair operated by me, his occupational therapist or assistants at the nursing home. Last week his personal chair was finally delivered and he has been learning to use the halo around his head to operate it himself. He loves the freedom and the independence that he has to get around in the chair. It is a learning process and his neck has been very sore but he has been catching on quickly. A few more weeks of therapy and practice and hopefully he will be a pro at it before we take him home. A group of very special friends and Great Banquet people have given their expertise and time to help with the renovations of our house. It is now accessible to Tom and his chair so that he will be able to get around inside. One more project that we would like to do is to have the sliding glass doors changed to French doors that both open so that he would have access to the deck on the back of our house. I think it will be very good for his body and spirit to be able to go out on the deck and be in the sunshine and fresh air. Because people continue to ask what we need and what they can do to help us I thought I would let you know that we could use help with our portion of the cost of this very expensive chair and getting the doors changed for him to have access to the deck.

On Friday, August 10, Tom was moved from Regional One in Memphis where we have been since the accident on May 18 to Brownsburg Healthcare Center in Indiana! It was such a relief to get back to Indiana. This facility is an hour from home (Lafayette) so we are almost home! We want to THANK EACH OF YOU for generous donations to this Go Fund Me account. And wanted to let you know that your donations were used toward the expense of the flight here. We flew on mission # 557 of GRACE ON WINGS which is a Christian ministry used for transporting patients who have medical issues that require them to fly but which they otherwise could not afford. We were required to pay for the plane’s jet fuel and ambulances on each end of the flight. All of your donations went toward that expense. So because of each you and Grace on Wings we are back in Indiana again! There are no words that thank you enough. God is so good!

Day 17:
No change today. Dad rested today. No therapy since it is Sunday. Hopefully they continue with therapy tomorrow and his breathing continues to get better.
Thank you for the continued prayers and support. Love you all.

Day 16:
Dad was much more alert today after sleeping so much following surgery yesterday. The infection was deeper than they expected and was around the rods and screws they placed in his neck for the broken bones. The surgeon felt that they were able to remove the infection. He will be on long-term IV antibiotics to be sure it clears up. Because today was Saturday there was no physical therapy but mom had dad shrugging his shoulders and moving his head and trying to move his hands and feet throughout the day. There was small movements in the toes on left foot. Not much progress on weaning from the breathing machine but doctors told mom it will be a slow and steady process as dad is able to tolerate it. Today is their 45th anniversary.
