Georgia’s Third Open Heart Surgery
Donation protected
Georgia has a rare heart condition called HLHS, Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome, which means she was born without a functioning left atrium and ventricle of her heart.
She spent her first six months of life at SickKids Children’s Hospital, where she underwent two open heart surgeries, one at just five days old, and the second at four months old. Her parents, Vanessa and Gord, stayed by her side the entire time, and didn’t return home once in that time.
HLHS typically requires a three step surgical procedure, which means she has one more scheduled surgery, called the Fontan procedure. Expecting the surgery to be later this year, Georgia’s parents were just informed it has been scheduled for June 5th, giving them very little time to prepare, both mentally and financially. Along with this information, they learned that this final scheduled procedure will in fact be two separate open heart surgeries. The first involving a valve repair and repair of the left pulmonary artery, and with no complications, the Fontan procedure will take place about a week later.
The ideal recovery time for Georgia is about one month, assuming she is free of any complications. This means one month without work for Vanessa and Gord, one month sleeping at Georgia’s bedside, and one month of copious amounts of coffee to get through the day.
It is my hope that together we can raise enough money to support Georgia and her parents as they prepare for their stay at SickKids Children’s Hospital. This will help fuel them with coffee and all the Tim Horton’s snacks they could need during their stay at SickKids. I’ve never met parents that are more encouraging, positive, and strong in every way. Plus it helps that Georgia is the most adorable, hilarious girl you could ever meet.
