Our Students Trip to UT - Austin!

The 5th graders of Longfellow Elementary are on a mission: a mission to succeed and thrive in the world of education and become positive, contributing members of society regardless of their socioeconomic background. Your donation will help send 130 students to The University of Texas in Austin to tour the campus and visit indvidual colleges; in addition, we will be touring The Texas Capitol Building for a full tour of our history. This is truly a once in a lifetime, yet life-changing trip which you can help make happen.
"What Starts Here Changes the World" is our classroom theme. Every morning, our classroom families recite the mission statement they created in which they have pledged the be the good in the world, and it starts when they step in our school every morning and through our classroom door. Being a Title 1 inclusive school, many of my students come from poverty stricken homes.
The problem is not the lack of desire, but the the lack of resources. It is hard for them to compete against other children at other schools due to the minimal resources at home and at our school. Being a fine arts magnet school, our children are full of amazing talent that deserves to be shown to the rest of the community. We have also earned the status of becoming the first Lighthouse school in our school district for The Leader In Me Program, which I have watched transform our children into global thinkers. Many of our students have learning disabilities such as dyslexia, processing skills, and basic reasoning. Many times, they have just been identified or are struggling emotionally and academically to stay motivated.
We are missing out on an opportunity to reach and provide more experiences and interventions leading our students to a more successful life. "Everyone can make a difference and everyone should try," John F. Kennedy once said. When I look at my students, I think about the challenges they face in their everyday life. I want them to know other people believe what they do can change the world.
