"Five for the Side"
I am asking for your help. I have this “crazy” idea that most of you (as I do) take every opportunity to wear navy and orange representing my love and pride for Gary West Side High School. While I am not a Stephon Marbury fan…he did get the colors right when launching his Starbury athletic line. I bought anything that was orange and blue because it represented my high school.
So if you have all the same nostalgic feelings and memories please join me in an effort to help our school. As you know Gary West Side is one of the few remaining high schools in Gary and it has fallen on difficult financial times. It is evident by the condition of our beloved “Surge” and the absence of our athletic trophies/photos that once adorned the walls. All are ruined or removed due to busted cases or leaking ceilings. Despite the decaying building and bleak aesthetics the school is still producing great athletes and acadamians.
We have been fortunate enough to continue excelling in athletics without proper equipment, uniforms, transportation or facilities (the track is in dire straits).
We need you to help by joining the “5 for the Side” Campaign. If we can get alumni to commit to $5 (1x, 2x or even monthly $60 a year) it would be a tremendous help and blessing to our beloved school and community. It would allow us to help fund student athletics, meet academic needs and perhaps sponsor community events. We can connect with alumni, friends and current students through programs, scholarships and activities that create awareness and loyalty, in support of social and academic excellence. Underlying all that we do is the belief in the value of education to the well-being of society, and a commitment to integrity, diversity, and service.
So I am asking you to show your “Pride for the Side” by giving “$5 for the Side”.
Vision and Mission:
· Enrich and support the lives of Gary West Side High School Alumni, students and the Northwest Indiana community by forming life-long relationships.
· To provide academic and athletic support, scholarship and mentorship opportunities to the Gary West Side High School student body.
· To provide assistance and opportunities for life-long learning, social and service activities that promote the advancement of the community at large.
· Offer programs of relevance and service for alumni http://gwshsaa.org/ and business partners to create support for Gary West Side High School.
Thanks for understanding the purpose. We have met our initial goal to keep things rolling. But don't be fooled. We still need everyone to be accountable for doing his/her own work. None of us will make thru the gates based on someone else's effort.
Keep the donations coming. Again, $5 dollars from every cougar we can find, who is able, goes a long way. $60 per year ($5 each month for a year) goes even further. I will be providing you a link that will detail each expenditure as we make purchases or support issues. These funds will be used to meet the day to day needs under $2k. Like the uniforms or school supplies. Mr. Little will be giving me a list of what supplies are needed. They ran out of paper last year (incredible).
We are in discussions with the West Side Foundation to work together on Capital Campaigns and grants for to tackle the bigger issues like the roof and track. Stay tuned.
Godbless the Cougar Family!
Cougars, why do you love West Side? Share your story, post to your friends and family. Ask them to help us!! My favorite cheer started something like this..."Ahhhhh...lets get it on...". Who remembers the beloved chant? Feel that spirit again by donating today. Keep the beat going!
Thank you for your continued support. This past year we were able to support the Prom Dress Initiative and Alumni Picnic with West Side Restoration Pride Alumni Group. Outfitted 50+ kids for Prom, raised $500.00 towards the Track restoration at the "Slide back to the Side" Picnic (the first time it has been held at our own school), provided hygiene and school supplies to students, supported GAPS Career Day at WS with 55 other professional alumni and donated $400 for the purchase of a professional ping pong table for the new Ping Pong Club thru GAPS

A $2.00 donation is asked to help offset the costs for the event and to make a contribution toward the renovations of the track and field. Become a member! Membership in the Gary West Side High School Alumni Association Inc. is a great way to demonstrate your pride. Your membership is a vote of confidence and enables the Alumni Association to provide great support for our students, our alma mater and community at large. http://gwshsaa.org/membership/
Alumni keep the donations coming. We are getting attention at the State level. 2 meetings to happen this week to tackle issues with alumni. Thanks for your support. Remember $5 per month is a cup of coffee and certainly less than a purse, bag, a pair of shades, shoes etc. Give up just one of those items or $5 per month and we can make a huge difference in our beloved community.
