Building Powerful Minds (YEP)

The circumstances and obstacles facing many black urban youth are troubling and often depressing; inter-generational poverty, mis-education, incarcerated parents and lack of knowledge of self, are just a few of the issues that many of our youth must confront. Without proper education and the confidence that would flow from knowing their true historic greatness, many of our youth become easy targets for the ever growing "school to prison pipeline." According to Law Professor Michelle Alexander, in many large urban cities due to mass incarceration, the majority of the young black male residents have felony convictions which hinder them greatly.

 

The Building Powerful Minds Youth Empowerment Program is the only organization in America that has developed and successfully implemented a scientific method of addressing the specific needs of these youth. BPM provides its youth with an unparalleled and dynamic combination of tools, resources and services including but not limited to;

Well qualified academic tutors and one on one tutoring sessions to increase performance in weak academic areas.
Positive, successful mentors and role models that display for our youth and instill in them the 4 core BPM values of God, Family, Education and Community.
An incentive structure that uses financial and other rewards to encourage academic excellence and overall disciplined living.
“Reverse Peer Pressure” this aspect of the BPM group method of learning and growing is built upon a culture amongst the veteran youth members of BPM which glorifies and promotes academic excellence and positive behaviors while frowning upon and discouraging academic mediocrity and negative behaviors.
Professional counseling (for our youth and their families) aimed at uncovering the root causes of negative behaviors and academic issues so that those problems can be addressed in the most effective ways.
An intense focus on Black history which teaches the vast record of greatness that blacks have achieved but which is unfortunately almost never taught in the public school system.
Physical tests and athletic competitions that instill principles of toughness, determination and relentlessness when pursing a goal, as well as overall health and physical fitness.
Entrepreneurial and career training aimed at instilling in our youth the importance of business ownership and management, financial literacy and wise spending and investment habits.
A punishment structure that provides real deterrents and consequences for negative behaviors and lackluster effort.   
 

Your contribution will help us provide our youth free of charge school supplies, meals at our events, transportation to and from tutoring sessions, educational and career focused trips, academic incentives and all of the resources needed to fully participate in the various aspects of our program.
