Mellon Educate Teaching Blitz

This year I will be traveling to Cape Town with approx 60 other teachers to work alongside local teachers in the schools supported by Mellon Educate.

For those of you who don’t know the Niall Mellon foundation was set up in 2002 and since then they have homed 100,000 people in the 25,000 homes they have built.

They have gone on to build 12 schools and last year was the first year in which they began the teaching blitz which I am so thrilled to be a part of this year.

My main goal while there this summer is to support and mentor the teachers of these schools and model good teaching practices.

These schools are based in Townships and face serious challenges:

- The children attending these schools are living in extreme poverty.

- Crime and gangs are extraordinarily high.

- The average classroom size is 55- 60 children

- 70% of children are not at grade level

- 1/3 of these children are victims of sexual and physical abuse.

- Many children’s journey to and from school is very dangerous.

- Many children only attend school because at school they receive breakfast and lunch.

These schools have little or no resources and things that we take for granted in the Irish classroom such as whiteboard markers, pencils, chalk etc are huge privileges in these schools.

In order to make this trip possible and to take over much needed resources I need to raise between €3500- €4000. I would greatly appreciate any donations on my Go Fund Me Page

Thank you so much x
