We, at I, AFRICA™ believe that Africans deserve to have their stories told from their perspectives. From the seemingly mundane activities that brings them joy, to the passion that drives them to create innovations that help their communities. From the streets of Kigali, to the medical centers in Cairo, to the beaches in Togo, there’s someone with a unique story to share.

Our passion comes from our belief that identity is a requirement to the human experience. The stories we tell ourselves and about ourselves define who we are. Whether we define ourselves by our religion, race, gender, height, class, or otherwise - the stories behind these things become our identity.

We often hear Africans say that the portrayal in the media of the African continent and its people is entirely one sided and almost dangerous. The story often paints african as impoverished, diseased, uneducated, and that with only a dollar a day they can be saved. And, it leaves out that they are hardworking; that they are doctors, writers, poets, models, entrepreneurs, and so much more.

We  believe those stories deserve to be told as well.

Those who are familiar with I, AFRICA™ (@iafrica54) know that we occasionally conduct “Snapchat Takeovers” in which we invite Africans currently living on the Continent to showcase their communities using our Snapchat account. This allows our audience to get an inside look of the continent. Even if it is just of one place for couple of hours it paints a different picture. You may also be familiar with the “Our Stories” feature on our website, where we highlight African students, many of whom tell unique accounts of their lives.

From these two projects, we connected with young Africans of various background looking to make a mark on the world. We saw the impact that their African identity, their African culture, and the communities in which they grew up had on their outlook on life and how they use these attributes to give back to their communities.  So we decided to create a podcast to have them tell us how they did it!

Who are they? What inspires them? What have their experiences been like? What is their story?

In 2019, I, AFRICA™ (@iafrica54) is taking its projects to the next level! We are looking to launch a  54-episode podcast series based on the ventures of several inspiring Africans who are currently working hard to incite change in their communities. With this podcast we hope to not only amplify the voices of Africans doing work on the continent but also capture their personal and unique narratives.

Later, we plan to compile these accounts into a book to be published. But to do all this, we need your help. So, we call on YOU lover of everything Africa; you who has a yearning to learn about the Continent; You who is rooting for the success of the African continent… YOU!  We call on YOU for help!
