Suspended Coffee and Pizza in PEI!

Donation protected
My name is Christy and I run the PEI Food Share page on Facebook. I’m passionate about addressing food access equality, and even more passionately believe in kindness making the world a hugely better place for everyone.

An initiative of PEI Food Share is to launch the Suspended Coffee and Pizza movement here in PEI. What’s a suspended coffee or pizza, I hear you ask? It’s a cup of coffee or slice of pizza paid for in advance by another customer as an anonymous act of charity. The tradition began in the working-class cafés of Naples, where someone who had experienced good luck would order a sospeso (suspended coffee), paying the price of two coffees but receiving and consuming only one.  Food and beverage operators offer suspended coffee or pizza on a first come, first served, no questions asked basis, enabling those who can’t afford it or who are down on their luck to have a moment’s comfort in the kindness of a stranger.

This movement has been making waves around the world, and has even spread to food establishments such as pizzerias.  What I’m doing is introducing this as far as possible across PEI, encouraging as many cafes and pizza places as possible to take part.  I’m funding some of this myself, but I know I can’t do it alone if I want to make a significant impact. So I need to reach out and ask for your support.

The initial campaign aims to get at least 40 establishments on board across PEI by November. They’ll be supplied with a flyer for their window (to advertise that they offer suspended coffee/pizza), a sign for their inside wall, post-it notes (for establishments that encourage people to write a note for the future customer they’re buying ahead for), and small chalkboards to register the available coffee/pizza tally (if the establishment doesn’t have a spare board already).  Some other small signage may also be supplied (depending on funds) to advertise the initiative at the cash register or other visible spots on the premises.

To anyone who would love to contribute to this movement by donating to this fund, thank you! All receipts will be made available for anyone who wishes to see them.

Any remaining funds raised will go 100% towards suspended coffee / pizza purchases in the establishments that do sign up.

With many heartfelt thanks,
Christy
