Help Reopen our Tribal College Child Care Services

$375 of $250,000 goal

Raised by 7 people in 1 month
The Spirit Lake Nation is home to Wakanheza Oti (Sacred Children’s Place) at Cankdeska Cikana Community College’s (CCCC).  Sacred Children’s Place is an on-campus child care center. The center is a nod to children being our most precious resource … but right now, those children and families need our help.

Background of Wakanheza Oti

In 2011, CCCC opened Wakanheza Oti immediately it became a thriving resource for the community. Licensed for up to 75 children, ages 6 weeks to 5 years old, the center is close to home and work providing a safe, learning environment for the development of the children.  A culturally appropriate curriculum is used that is family-based and community-friendly.  The center also provides a hands-on experience (internships and apprenticeships) for CCCC students majoring in Early Childhood Education (ECE).

Unfortunately, and due to financial challenges, Wakanheza Oti was closed on June 1, 2018.  This impacted over 45 families and those families continue to struggle for quality child care services.  Many parents must now travel long distances for appropriate child care.

Fundraising Goal

CCCC is launching a social media and direct marketing campaign to raise funds to reopen Wakanheza Oti.  The initial goal is $250,000 so that services may be restored for fall semester 2019.  The social media campaign will be the initiation of the fund raising as CCCC strategizes for sustaining the child care services with the help of the families.

Please help us by DONATING to and SHARING the CCCC campaign with the world.  Your contribution will help to restore the child care services as well as support the Native college students who are entering Early Childhood Education professions.

Having a daycare close to my work is better than me having to drive 30+ miles to town for reliable daycare. Wakanheza Oti provided that for me.

"When the daycare closed it was hard to find a reliable daycare close by. Now I'm having another child and my current daycare cannot take it. So now I'm trying to find another daycare that can take two children. We really do need more daycares in our area."
