Hello family and friends! This GoFundMe has been set up by 16 Umass Dartmouth students to help us raise money for our Global Health Service Trip to Costa Rica in January of 2019. We will be staying in the small village of Quepos, Costa Rica for one week where we will be working with the local people on a number of health oriented activities.
We will be extremely busy once we hit the ground in Costa Rica. Our main focus will be providing dynamic, informative and educational workshops that collaborate in the public health of the inhabitants of El Cocal and Boca Vieja. Some topics we will be working with are healthy lifestyles, impact of pollution & trash on health, good nutrition & exercise, and maternal-child health. As many of us are Nursing and Pre Health majors, you can imagine how ecstatic we are to collaborate and have this amazing opportunity to get some real life experiences.
Our typical day will start early and our mornings will be devoted to our workshops. We will break for lunch, which will be eaten at one of the local's home, and spend the afternoons planning for the next day. We will also be meeting with the local doctor, attending a Farmer's Market, and exploring the endless beauty that the coast of Costa Rica has to offer.
Our group is large which means we will have the ability to volunteer in two local villages - El Cocal and Boca Veija. These villages are home to many different groups of people, with many immigrants from Nicaragua, Cuba, and Panama. We will be working with the Global Volunteers International program and they has been in this area since 1998 and have focused on working with the community to improve the economy, education, and create job opportunities.
So, we hope that you are as excited for us as we are!! With this coming holiday season, many of us are asking for donations to our trip in lieu of gifts. This trip is $1700 per student, and while we have been busy fundraising, we are also hoping that our friends and family will consider donating to help us cover the costs of flights, transportation, and accommodations.
Any donation we would be immensely grateful for, whether it be a check or your good wishes, we thank you.
Bhumi, Joria, Sam, Nicole Q, Aleesia, Alisha, Ann-Melissa, Ashley, Gabriella, Jenna,Kylee, Lucy, Mariana, Nicole S, Sandip, and Shawn.
