Whitney Bennefield recieved a Traumatic Brain Injury in an auto vs motorcycle accident Monday August 22, 2016 in Denver, Colorado.  That is when she and the person who was driving the motorcycle they were on collided with a car in Aurora, Colorado.
The person she was on the cycle with was killed. She hit the car windshield and vaulted over the car almost 80 feet from the point of impact across various hard surfaces and landscaping.
At the scene, she was barely breathing on her own and listless. She was transported to The Medical Center of Aurora where she underwent emergency surgery for several hours. Her injuries were such, that she was unrecognizable compared to her photo ID. She was in ICU for three weeks with massive injuries. Her situation in the first 72 hours after the accident was life-threatening and uncertain under heavy sedation.  She moved from survival to stabilzation  in the first week.

She then had 6 surgical procedures within the first 12 days. Her injuries include massive head trauma - the surgeons have removed the right side of her skull to relieve pressure to the brain, allowing it to swell and drain. She lost some of her crainial bone in the accident. She will require significant facial reconstruction and cosmetic surgery. She broke her right lower jawbone, upper jawbone above her front teeth, fractured her nose between her eyebrows and shattered her right orbital into four distinct parts.  Both arms are displaced fractures mid- humerus, compound fracture to right tibia, large evulsion on top of right foot, bruised lungs, fractured L-4/L5 tailbone, and carotid artery dissection . The trauma and ensuing post surgical procedures made for significant edema. A blood clot filter was inserted femorally into the inferior vena cava. Orthopedic surgery put carbon/metal rod and pins in the compound leg fracture, ankle and both arms.

Whitney has a long road ahead, but the positives she has in her favor include her youthfulness. Had she been even 10 years older, the experts say unlikely she would still be with us. She reacts to aggressive physical touch  and some response to verbal commands.

As we are consumed with meetings of various neurology, pulmonary, orthopedic, trauma, ICU, therapists and tending to her needs personally, we appreciate your interest and patience as we respond as best we can. We are all deeply grateful for all the outpouring of prayers and encouragement that we have received.  Please pray for all the many details we will be handling on her behalf.

While her physical and mental recovery is her biggest concern, she will be facing extreme financial difficulty with medical bills, months & very likely years of rehab,  the loss of income  at work for an unknown period of time, and the prospect of learning new skills for future employment.

On Whitney's behalf, we thank you for your time and contributions.
Scott and Julie, Whitney's parents, will be withdrawing and managing the Go Fund Me donations on Whitney's behalf.
