Volunteer Trip to Fiji
Donation protected
Hi! I'm Emilia, a first-year student studying Psychology at the University of York. Through University I became aware of the Think Pacific charity and decided to get involved - please read below to see more about my volunteering and the charity.
On 24th June this year, I will be flying to Fiji to help in schools in rural communities with education, sport and extra-curricular activities. This is necessary as 75% of children grow up in poverty, which has consequences such as only 50% of people having access to safe drinking water and sanitation and living on less than 1 dollar a day.
Only 5% of children in these areas have access to early years education and the schools that are set up are in poor condition and have limited materials. In addition to this, youth schemes, sport and extra-curricular activities are extremely limited. These facts were worsened in 2016 as over 400 schools were damaged due to Fiji suffering its worst cyclone ever recorded; which also displaced 50,000 families.
Think Pacific is a charity solely set up in Fiji, and since establishing in 2009 they have had a massive impact on the community which has included supporting 10,000 children each year, 1000+ children attending early years education annually and a 600% increase in sports participation.
As a volunteer, I will be staying with a family in a rural community for a month. During the week, I will be helping in local schools to aid children who are falling behind in Maths and English. After the school day, I will be running sports and extra-curricular activities for the children to join in with such as singing and dancing.
Thank you for taking the time to read this, any donations would be much appreciated! If you'd like to learn more about the Think Pacific charity please clink the link below:
