Laid off just before Christmas

Hi this is Roger Smith, my husband Gary and I had an unexpected surprise here just before Christmas ... I got laid off from my job a few days ago, which was our sole source of income. Please don't misunderstand me, I'm not upset with my company ... it wasn't my manager's decision, and he and our very sweet HR VP affirmed to me more than once that it had nothing to do with my performance, the region that I served had lost business and a decision was made higher up in the company to eliminate my position. There weren't any positions they could transfer me into, but she (HR) encouraged me to watch their job postings, and that they'd love to have me back if there's a chance.

That's the good part, and it's a wonderful affirmation under the circumstances. But as I said it was our only source of income. Gary is on the autism spectrum, and while he has a support team helping him find work, it's very challenging, as some of you will know if you also have loved ones on the spectrum. I was slowly advancing in my company, but still we struggled to get by and any savings usually were quickly used for car servicing or other expenses that are just part of life.

For healthcare, of course the Dec. 15 deadline to apply under the ACA (Obamacare) is only a few days away, so I've applied for that and am scrambling to find the most affordable coverage possible in case it's a while till I have coverage for us from work again. I'll get unemployment (also filed for that right away), but of course that is only about half of what work income was. I interviewed again with the agency who found me that job in the first place, and am doing my own job search as well, so hopefully something will come through soon.

So it's a little alarming, to say the least. Rule of thumb is to try to have several months' funds saved for times like this, as I mentioned we haven't been able to put anything aside that wasn't quickly eaten by other costs, so we are asking our friends and trusting the love of God to help us put together a few months' worth of funds to help us past this. If, hopefully, work comes through soon, of course we'll call this off.

We're going to share love and good cheer this Christmas no matter what, so may you and yours have wonderful holidays, and if you are in need may you be taken care of as well. Thanks and God bless you!

We'd like to say how deeply grateful we are for all the help people have generously given so far, it means a great deal. We still are struggling to make sure we bridge the gap till steady work comes around, and we're asking if you can spare to help (we know, holidays are tough as it is), that you will do what you can. Our thanks, prayers for all in need, and wishes for a merry holiday season to you all.
