Barbara's Battle

Donation protected
On Dec. 17, 2019, 64-year-old Barbara found a lump in her left breast. Two days later, she had a mammogram, ultrasound and an MRI. On Dec. 23, 2019, she was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma. She will undergo a partial mastectomy on Jan. 9, 2020, where then it will be determined if cancer has spread to any other areas or lymph nodes in her body. She’ll begin radiation and chemotherapy once she’s healed from the mastectomy.

While there is never a “good” time to be diagnosed with cancer, Barbara’s health insurance expires at the end of January, and she is not eligible for Medicare until May 2020, leaving her uninsured throughout this extensive time of treatment.

Barbara worked hard for over 30 years, many times working two jobs during the day and night shifts, to provide for her family and give her kids the best life possible, while still finding the time to be home for them when they got home from school. She’s a driving force in the lives of her three grandchildren, taking them up North in the summer, having sleepovers, and being present at their school functions. She and her husband, Dennis, whom she’s been married to for 47 years, were excited about the start of their new life after her recent retirement and had big plans to do the things they’ve worked so hard for all these years.

For now, Barbara is putting those plans of adventure on hold to fight her breast cancer battle and focus on being there for her grandchildren, her children and her husband.

We’d like to help offset Barbara’s medical costs and ultimately help her give back to breast cancer research so the 1 in 8 women (roughly 12 percent) who must endure invasive breast cancer in their lifetime can be cured and live the long and healthy lives they deserve.

Barbara is ready to fight and beat her breast cancer diagnosis as there is still so much in this life for her to see and experience. She’s adamant about surviving her breast cancer and is ready to put up her biggest fight to date. Any funds raised will be used to cover the costs of her treatment until her Medicare begins and then donated to breast cancer research.
