Embers of Hope

Nearly three years ago our families lives were forever changed by the birth of our youngest grand daughter Emberlyn. On 9/11/11 Emberlyn was born with Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (No diaphragm), one partially working lung, failure to thrive, trisomy x, chromosome abnormalities, chronic repository failure and severe pulmonary hypertension these conditions make a common illness like the cold for us into a life threatening illness for her. For more than half of her life Emberlyn has been in out and of the hospital, she's underwent more than 15 surgeries, she has survived many brushes with death and always fight her way back; However last March Emberlyn became critically ill and had to undergo an emergency tracheostomy and became totally ventilator/life support dependent to live, this situation was meant to prolong her life as her condition is terminal and based on Emberlyns past the doctors are skeptical whether or not she will survive this cold and flu season.

My son a (Navy reservist) was activated last year and sent to Afghanistan, his tour however was cut short by Emberlyn's sickness last spring. Before my sons deployment his family lived in Florida traveling 4 1/2 hours from their home to the hospital numerous times a week, while taking care of their other children this as you can imagine took a terrible financial toll on his family. Last year my son and his family decided for the sake of his family and Emberlyn it would be benefical to be closer to a hospital that had the capability of taking care of Emberlyn and was closer to home. So they chose Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. Where they currently live.
