NDSS Student Experiments in Space!

Donation protected
Starting in September 2017, all Nanaimo District Secondary Students from grade 8 to 12, will get a once in a lifetime opportunity that some of the world’s best researchers can only dream of realizing . They will be competing to design a science experiment that will be tested aboard the International Space Station in Spring 2018. They will be testing the effect of a microgravity environment on an experiment of their choice. One group of students from NDSS will have their experiment chosen by NASA engineers at the Smithsonian Institution Building in Washington, DC.

This is a community initiative and every student  will be involved in some aspect of this opportunity, whether it is a Mission Patch logo or the design experiment, itself. The experiment is driven by a single inquiry question, "What is the role of gravity in the system under investigation?"  This initiative addresses the STEAM model of science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics.

But in order for the students to have this opportunity, they need support. It costs $24,000 USD to bring a single student experiment up to the Space Station by the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. And the funds need to be confirmed by August 28, 2017.  To date we have $2400 USD from School District 68 but more funds are required. We realize that this is short notice but the rewards will be immeasurable for the students if the funding can be obtained. We have over 23 committed teachers and administrators wanting to start this in September!

To further add to the student's experience, the winning group will be part of a delegation to the Mission Launch at the Kennedy Space Center, Florida. These same students will then be able to present their research at the student conference at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, Washington, DC in Summer 2018. The links below explain in detain the Student Spaceflight Experiments Program (SSEP).

So please help these students have a chance!
