Help Derek Miller Fight Cancer

Hello everyone, my good friend Derek Miller was diagnosed with testicular cancer a few months back. About a month ago Derek underwent his first surgery in which he believed he was getting just one of his testicles removed. He knew there was a chance they would have to remove both if they feared the cancer had spread, but the doctors were optimistic this wasn’t the case. When Derek awoke from surgery he was informed that unfortunately the surgery required for both his testicles to be removed. Derek has always had a never lose mentality, and that is why they froze some of his uninfected sperm so that WHEN he beats cancer he will have the opportunity to have children. Going forward for the rest of his life he is going to have to deal with monthly testosterone replacement treatments. The cancer has spread to his kidney and the hope is they can destroy the cancer without having to remove the kidney.

For those of you who know Derek, I️ don’t have to tell you he is one of the most strong minded, independent, genuine, glass half full people I️ have ever come across. For people who have had the luxury of crossing paths with him, I️ think I️ can speak on your behalf when I️ say he is as close to invincible as you can come, which is why he would never ask for help.

That is why I️ am reaching out to you on his behalf to help him along this journey that we all know his is going to defeat. As a friend of mine, Derek has always showcased the best qualities you look for in a person. He has had my back time and time again, and I️ know that is the case with many of you reading this right now. It’s time for us to change roles and show him that we have HIS back this time.

Derek is in the midst of his 12 week chemo treatment and the hospital bills continue to pile up. When I asked Derek what his plans were, he told me he would get a weekend job. How many people do you know that after getting both testicles removed are thinking about a new job? THAT is exactly who derek is. He’s a fighter; he’s someone who never wants a handout; he’s someone who hasn’t complained once throughout the entire process or shown any signs of weakness. His resilience and courage is something that I️ look up to and drives me to be half the person he is each day.

To friends & family, colleagues & acquaintances, past and present brothers of Phi Sigma Kappa, if you can contribute any dollar amount whatsoever it would be appreciated and will go directly to hospital bills/living expenses/treatments while he fights this battle with cancer. He’s not alone in this fight and it’s time to show him that we’re all fighting behind him.
