Overlanders are solo cyclists, like the early Grand Tour riders of the 19th and 20th century, who cycle long distances across the Australian continent. Days of 20 hours in the saddle, enduring the burning sun, freezing nights, thirst, hunger, fatige and the wildlife for 12 days or more, push the cyclists to their limits.
This is exactly what Matthijs Ligt is going to do during the solo and self-supporting bicylce race called 'Indian Pacific Wheel Race ' (IPWR). This ultra-endurance bicycle race covers 5500km from Fremantle (WA) to Sydney (NSW) and is sensational to follow online 24/7 by GPS-tracking and through social media. The route will lead Matthijs across the Nullabor and through all major southern cities, Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney, connecting the Indian Ocean with the Pacific Ocean.
During IPWR 2017 he was riding in the Top10 when the race was cancelled after the tragic accident of Mike Hall. With the passion and dedication of a professional athlete, Matthijs is preparing for his dream to ride IPWR 2018. His goal is to finish the race he started last year, to ride high in the Top10 and to give you the excitement of following this amazing bicycle race across Australia.
As an accomplished ultra-endurance cyclist Matthijs cycled the Transcontinental Race several times. Matthijs has always financed his own training, preparations and races, but to make IPWR 2018 happen Matthijs needs your support! On 17 March 2018 at 06:22 the start sign will sound at the South Mole Lighthouse, let's help Matthijs to be there!
