Delaney's Trip to Nepal

Donation protected
As one of her elementary teachers, I have known Delaney Newport since she was in 2nd grade. I also know Delaney through her work with Ten Friends. Ten Friends is a non-profit that supports orphanage children, young women, and communities in a remote region of Nepal.

Delaney has always had an energy and enthusiasm for helping others in need. Early on, I saw Delaney was willing to take action and work hard to make a difference. She even wanted to attend board meetings as a child! As per her initiative, Delaney began attending our Ten Friends board meetings in seventh grade. As president of Ten Friends, I was glad to have her input and insights. All of us were. Delaney was especially interested in the Ten Friends Himalayan Education Center (HEC) and the village library project. The HEC supports young women in the eastern Makalu region of Nepal, who want to become teachers in their village, or nearby. The library project promotes literacy in small villages by initiating community libraries in areas without access to books.

When she entered ninth grade, Delaney started organizing yearly Ten Friends fundraisers at her school. She dedicated the donations to supporting the young women of the HEC and establishing libraries in rural Nepal. These fundraisers were amazingly successful. I cannot overstate how much work she did, year after year, to organize and smoothly execute these events. They were well attended and expertly managed. Tens of thousands of dollars were generated which benefited the HEC girls and created libraries. As she raised the money to create them, those libraries now have a plaque with Delaney’s name.

Delaney is graduating from high school this June. Her tireless volunteering and fundraising work has been extraordinary especially considering she has never been to Nepal. She hasn’t met the girls at the HEC but they know of her, would like to meet her and thank her. Delaney’s work has changed lives in Nepal.

She has a unique bond with people she hasn’t met and a place she hasn’t been. Delaney needs to visit Nepal and see all the amazing work she has done! But she can’t afford the trip to Nepal and will need help getting there. I hope you will help support the travel expenses for her journey to Nepal so she can visit the young women of the HEC, her libraries and new friends. Although she never asked for anything in return for all that she has done, it is the right thing to do.
