Mexico City Earthquake Survivor

Donation protected
Yesterday morning we were honoring the deadliest earthquake to ever hit Mexico City in 32 years by doing an earthquake drill. The entire country participated.

Later that day, when things started to shake, we didn't quite believe anything was happening. We started walking out calmly. As I was going down the stairs the quake reached its peak making it almost impossible to go down them. We feared for our lives. The screams were deafening. I was terrified!

I had already experienced an earthquake in Oaxaca that was pretty bad, but this one was throwing us all over each other. Panic set into all of us. Each stair seemed harder and harder to take because were being tossed around and everyone was running and pushing. Complete chaos. Nothing like the practice drill of the morning. When I finally made it the last stair down I ran out into an open space and threw myself on solid ground just in time to see my school falls apart. As I looked around I saw my principal throw herself on the floor crying and paralyzed. She was physically lifted out of danger, as she had collapsed under a walkway. The absolute 5 worst minutes of my life.

I can still see my friends crying and panicking as they lay on the ground. Fortunately all of my classmates are safe. I wish I could say the same for neighboring schools. As I sit here and wipe tears from my eyes I'm doing the only thing I can. As I child who was raised by a mom who has dragged me all over the world to do volunteer work, I was raised as what my mother calls a "helper."

I am a helper.

I am fortunate enough to be bilingual with dual citizenship and can give my community an English voice. So many people were affected. My school was shut down until further notice. I would like to raise money to support my school community. Many have lost everything. Although there is a part of me that just wants to shut down, I know I can't because other people are forced to shut down because they have no choice.

I was away from my mom until just a few hours ago. Communications were down and still are in some parts. Many roads roads are completely blocked. It feels good to be home. Other people can't say that.

MPlease help me be a helper.
