September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

My nephew is one that has been affected by this unforgiving disease. Danny was diagnosed with Leukemia in May 2017, when he was 8 years old. At the time, we felt like this was the worst thing that could ever happen to our family. In the late hours of the following day, we realized how much worse it could get. The Leukemia had spread to Danny’s brain and resulted in a cerebral hemorrhage on the left side.  He had emergency surgery to remove part of his skull and relieve the pressure the blood clot was putting on his brain. What followed were days of no promises and uncertainty. We lived not knowing what the next minute or hour would bring. Danny was put into an induced coma for close to 2 months. He also began the induction phase of chemotherapy. He was in the fight of his life. We never left his side.

A week after the first brain surgery, Danny had another one to drain the blood clot which had resulted in brain damage.  In the following months, Danny slowly became aware of his surroundings, had multiple surgeries, procedures, x-rays, CAT Scans, and MRI’s. He had to relearn how to talk, eat, sit up, stand, and walk. His recovery has been slow and riddled with setbacks. The blood clot in his brain caused partial paralysis of his right side, particularly impacting his ability to use his right leg, arm and hand, and aphasia (trouble formulating words).  With all this, he continues to stay on his chemotherapy and will for the next couple of years.

Daniel has shown amazing strength and courage. My sister and our family continue to stand by Danny and fight with him. He is receiving daily therapies to help him regain as much mobility and cognitive function as possible. He also needs caregivers throughout the day to help him. We have set up this GoFundMe page to help my sister and brother-in-law, Kiley and Patrick Sullivan, pay for Dan’s care over the next couple of years.

Many people have reached out to lend support and encouragement. Our family is so grateful. Others have asked how they can be of help during this time.  Please consider contributing to this GoFundMe campaign to help Danny's family with paying for his care.  His journey continues to be long and bumpy, but we are determined to win. Thank you!
