Ryder Walters Assistance Dog Fund

Ryder suffers from Autism Spectrum Disorder (non verbal) and also has Intellectual Disabilities, and unfortunately through this he does not have the ability to communicate verbally or interact socially and many other normal daily activities we all take for granted.
Ryder is 6 ½ years old and currently attends Sunbury & Macedon Ranges Specialist School Melbourne Australia where he is now learning how to speak (it was so exciting to be able to hear him say something as simple mum and dad and yes and no!!! after 5 years!), how to communicate via sign language, pop-up cards, interactive tablets, and is also learning a wide range of social activities to aid him.
Due to Ryder’s disadvantages, we are trying to raise funding for a “Smart Pup” to aid him and his family. A “Smart Pup” is a specially trained dog that provides early intervention support and therapy for children with special needs. This dog will provide Ryder with the ability to walk down the street or to school without holding my hand at all times, enable him to play outside his home with his older brother just to identify a few benefits, ultimately the Smart Dog will act as a companion to Ryder at all times.
Smart Pups Assistance Dogs for Special Needs Children Inc. train golden retriever and labrador puppies to provide early intervention support and therapy for children from 3 to 18 years old. This makes the work of Smart Pups very unique, as most other organisations only place service dogs certified for full public access with people over 18 years of age. A Smart Pup looks out for the health and wellbeing of the child, keeping them safe and out of harms way. Trained to assist a child with specific daily routines, a Smart Pup can help reduce anxiety and increase daily successes in a variety of ways. A Smart Pup also acts as a bridge between the child and the rest of the world, easing feelings of isolation and fostering opportunities for social inclusion, friendship and belonging.
