What is Fairchild Wheeler?

Fairchild Wheeler is an Interdistrict MultiMagnet School located in Bridgeport, Connecticut. The school’s mission is to generate a new generation of engineers. There are three schools located within the campus. These schools are Information Technology, Biotech and Zoology and the Aerospace and Hydrospace school which is where our club is located.

Aero/Hydrospace Engineering is a STEM based program in which students learn the practical application of science and math to solve problems. Learning to use software, interacting with regional industry leaders and collaborating with state and local universities, student’s research, design and develop creative solutions for exploration and discovery.

The Aerospace/Hydrospace Engineering School’s mission is to educate the nation's future leaders in the science and art of the physical sciences and aerospace engineering. Further, we seek to expand the frontiers of engineering science and to encourage technological innovation while fostering academic excellence and scholarly learning in a project based learning environment.

What is Makers Club?

The Fairchild Wheeler Makers Club is a group of eight aero/hydrospace engineering sophomores united by a common passion for turning innovative ideas into actionable building projects. The club focuses its efforts on projects in the fields of electronics, robotics, CAD modeling, 3D printing, CNC milling, as well as more traditional endeavors in the woodworking and metalworking disciplines. The club’s goals are to accelerate the creation of innovative products and ideas and to develop both the engineering and practical skills of its members.

About The Project - Nessie

During the 2015-2016 school year, the Fairchild Wheeler Makers Club has been engaged in an ambitious hydrospace engineering project. The club members are currently converting an Optimist Pram (an 8 ft. sailing dinghy) into a hydrofoiling motor craft. Hydrofoiling technology leverages the principles of aerospace engineering to make boats fly! As a hydrofoil equipped watercraft increases in speed, the hydrofoil elements below the hull develop enough lift to raise the hull out of the water, which greatly reduces hull drag. This provides a corresponding increase in speed and fuel efficiency.

Why Donate?

Your generous donations will be used to purchase the building materials, tools, and equipment necessary for turning our dream into a reality. We plan on entering our innovative hydrofoiling motor craft into the 2016 Westport Maker Faire, which has a projected attendance of 10,000 visitors. If you are a company and would like to see your logo on our boat, please contact us at [email redacted], the price for putting your logo on our boat is $50. Thanks!
