Send 1st Graders to PSU B-Ball Game

My name is Dan Guthrie or, as my students call me, “Mr. G.” As a first grade teacher in a low income school in Brownsville, Brooklyn, I am always looking for new ways to get my students excited about their education and their future. In our school, each class is themed based on the alma mater of the teacher. My class has been Penn State themed for the past two years and, like all true Penn Staters, my class is known for its school pride.
For example, earlier this year, one of the parents from last year’s class excitedly told me a story. Over the summer, while driving through Pennsylvania with her daughter, my former student, they stopped at a Cracker Barrel where a the walls were covered in Penn State apparel. My former student promptly informed the waiter that her first grade classroom was Penn State themed and that she was going to go to college there when she was older. The mother was thrilled that her daughter not only had such a fond memory of school but that she was already talking about going to college at seven years old.
Also, around November of this year, one of my current student's parents went to the school board meeting and told the entire board how much her daughter loves school and how every day she tells her mom that she is going to go to Penn State when she is older and become a teacher.
Penn State's basketball team will be playing Michigan at Madison Square Garden on January 30th. I believe this is a great chance to continue to build my students’ love of Penn State and their interest in pursuing a college degree. Many of my students would not normally have the opportunity to attend an event like this and they would surely create special memories seeing "their college" in person.
If you are able, please help me continue to share the joy of a great University with the Penn State alumni of the future. I hope to take a group of students to the basketball game this month and any extra funds will go toward classroom supplies or future similar events for my students. Every day I strive to inspire children who would not otherwise have a concept of higher education to pursue a college career—and hopefully, they choose Penn State.
