Brandon McElhenie's Road To Recovery

Brandon McElhenie is a 25 year old that was born and raised in Battle Creek, Michigan. From a very young age, he has had an interest in anything with a motor and wheels - car, dirt bike, ATV - you name it, Brandon's tried it. He's been riding his dirt bikes at Silver Lake since he can remember and just this year he purchased a Yamaha YXZ 1000. He and his girlfriend, Sara were looking forward to spending many weekends there this summer. Unfortunately, on April 8th, Brandon and another passenger were in a serious accident on the Silver Lake Sand Dunes. His Yamaha flipped end over end and his roll cage was crushed on the first impact. He suffered a broken neck in 3 places, a partially severed spinal cord and an extensive cut to his head. He was airlifted to Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids where he underwent surgery to fix the 4th, 5th and 6th vertebrates. Upon arrival he was considered paralyzed from the neck down. Thankfully, after his surgery and after some of the swelling went down, he was able to move his arms. After a few days, Brandon made considerable improvement and had started moving his legs. Once he is released from Spectrum, he will spend 8-10 weeks at Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Center. He is currently on track for a 12-18 month recovery.

Brandon's parents, Ken and Fran McElhenie, his sister, Taylor and his girlfriend Sara plus MANY other family members and friends have been by his side since the accident. The amount of support and prayers surrounding him are immense and Brandon couldn't be any more grateful and appreciative.
