my name is Elisabeth Vos and I volunteer for the Bonaire Tennis Federation (BTF) as the Junior Tennis Iniatiative Coordinator on the small Caribbean island of Bonaire with a little over 17.000 inhabitants of which around 4000 children. BTF is promoting the sport of tennis on Bonaire, in particular for all children in the ages 4 through 18.
Unfortunately after five years of the new constitutional status of Bonaire, poverty is the main issue. On Bonaire, over 50% of our inhabitants live below the poverty level. Practically all courts are closed on Bonaire and the only way to promote tennis is to use the paved playgrounds in the neighbourhoods.
For 2016 BTF has its focus on two major youth projects.
1) The “Tenis di Bario” project 2016
This project will be led by volunteers under my JTI guidance. A successful launch and pilot project in Antriol and Noord Salina in 2015 introduced over 65 children to tennis.
In 2016, all other neighborhoods will have a project during the afterschool program in the Centro di Bario’s. BTF will introduce tennis to at least another 200 children in 2016! For this project BTF needs more equipment like rackets and balls, as well as trophies, medals and diplomas. The budget for this project totals $1500.
2) Junior Davis Cup Team Boys U16
The best youth tennis players have an opportunity to represent Bonaire in International Junior Championships organized by the International Tennis Federation, ITF. For the first time ever Bonaire will be represented by a U16 Boys team in the upcoming Junior Davis Cup pre-qualifying tournament in the Dominican Republic end of January 2016. The budget totals $3000, including flight tickets, F&B, uniforms, coaching. BTF is very proud of these top juniors and helps them to cover expenses by organizing fundraisers.
BTF is approaching you to support the tennis youth of Bonaire any way you can. We will need a grand portion of the funds before January 23, 2016.
Let’s put our efforts together and create this unique opportunity for the less privileged children of Bonaire.
