Haiti Biosolids Composting - Nov. 2013

Tax deductible
SANITATION COMPOSTING to HELP MY HAITIAN FRIENDS!

We at Sonje Ayiti Organization have made a vow to our Haitian neighbors to treat the waste collected in public toilets in the environs of Cap Haitien, Haiti and thus provide a critical element in stopping the spread of water-borne epidemic diseases, such as cholera. Sonje Ayiti has obtained a site in Limonade, Haiti on which to build a biosolids composting facility and 35 public toilets were recently constructed (but are not yet open for use). A partner organization, SOIL, has recently constructed a similar composting facility on an adjacent site. However we have identified the need for microbiological testing to ensure that the finished product meets the threshold of safety established by the US EPA. The equipment needed to do such testing will be installed at a nearby brand new University to provide a practical educational tool in addition to providing the certainty that the finished compost we are generating meets the spirit of our vow before applying it as a nutrient-rich agricultural amendment.

The need for the microbiological testing equipment was identified as a pre-requisite to the construction of the full-scale composting facility wherein we will collect and treat the waste from approximately 50 public toilets. Because of this, the budget for this trip has increased from $4,000 to $9,000 reflecting the cost of the equipment to set up a purpose-built microbiological laboratory and provide training in the test procedures.

The previously announced June trip has been postponed until November 2013 to provide additional time for fundraising toward the price of the laboratory equipment. I sincerely appreciate the assistance that has been provided already. Please, help me meet the goal of $9,000 by November to ensure that we may complete the work we have started in full assurance that we are doing good by our Haitian friends.

I deeply appreciate the assistance of Church at the Beach NSB
with this critical humanitarian and environmental missions trip.

With Warm Regards,
