Alex's Recovery
Donation protected
Alex was involved in a life changing accident at the Murray River on Australia Day morning. Not realising the shallow depth of the water, he dived in head first, causing immediate injury to his neck and spine. He was unable to move but luckily able to call out to his friends for help. They pulled him out of the water and contacted emergency services. Paramedics assessed him and he was then airlifted to the Royal Adelaide Hospital by helicopter.
An MRI confirmed he had suffered a severe and serious spinal injury. He had crushed two vertebrae (C6 and C7) causing compression on his spinal cord. He underwent urgent surgery which was successful in removing bone debris from the spinal cord and caging off the two crushed vertebrae.
After fighting off some complications in the ICU, Alex has now been moved to the Spinal Ward of the RAH. He still has no feeling from his chest down. The extent of nerve damage and the recovery timeframes is unknown. Intensive rehabilitation is going to be required. Every day Alex is making small but significant improvements in his hand and arm movement. Family and friends are positive that with a dedicated medical professional team and Alex’s strong will and determination, he will be able tackle the long journey ahead to regain good physical function and the ability to walk again.
Many of Alex’s family and friends have been in contact wanting to help or contribute in any way. We have created this page for those of you who wish to donate to the significant medical and rehabilitation costs that Alex will face on his journey to recovery. All proceeds will go directly to the cost of medical treatment, rehabilitation services and any specialised aids or equipment required.
