Here is the original story that was posted by the City of Jonesboro, GA Police Department on Tuesday:

Earlier today OIC Spencer pulled over a vehicle for no insurance. After speaking with the driver and passenger she determined they were homeless and the vehicle was not only a mode of transportation but also a temporary home as today was their last day at a local motel. OIC Spencer determined that writing a citation would only burden this family and instead decided to purchase vehicle insurance for them at her expense. Ofc. Waters whom came to assist decided he would purchase the family’s lunch. Great job OIC Spencer and Ofc. Waters.

Rayshell and Joe Blakney are Fayetteville residents with a big family and a big need.  Due to tough times, this family of 8 is currently living in their car. Two of the kids are in school during the day, and their four other children are too young for school. As you can imagine this is not an ideal situation for anyone.
Joe is Marine veteran with a full time job. They belong to church community. They are a loving family.
This fund has been set up as a way for neighbors to help neighbors and families to help families. The most immediate need is funding to get a roof over this family's head. Donations of "things" will be 100% appreciated but the first priority is housing.  Please consider helping this sweet family and sharing this page so we can get them out of their car and into a safe, comfortable home.

This family is so grateful to the wonderful Jonesboro Police department who helped them already and wants everyone to know that they will pay it forward when they can.

We did it! Joe and Shell signed a lease this morning. We are so grateful to everyone who shared, donated, and prayed for this family. But if you have any extra funds or haven’t had a chance yet to share this story, please do! We still need to cover some of the move-in costs and utility deposits. Joe’s new job is going so well and Shell is able to get back to her online college. They are doing big things!

Here is the update. We have been forced to spend almost all of our funds on the extended stay hotel, car insurance, car payments, and food and gas. Most rental companies want a tenant to make three times their rent and have 24 months of stable work history. We know this is just business but it makes it almost impossible for families like this one to get out of the vicious cycle of extended stay hotels. We are desperate to raise more funds to put down on a rental. Joe started a new job this week which was offered by someone who saw his story on tv. Shell has two more semesters left to get a collage degree in Human Resources. We have a laptop for her so she can complete her classwork and work from home. We need an angel who has funds, a rental property, or a tie to benefactor who is committed to helping veterans.

The Blakney Family is doing much better! They are still in an extended stay hotel until we can get them into a rental home. The funds will go towards rent, car insurance, and all of the other expenses that have added up recently. They are working with a Veterans organization on housing so we hope the next update will be about a forever home! Thank you again for your support
