Super Tubie

Hello everyone my name is Shayla Keefe and I am a senior at MHS, I wanted to tell you all a little bit about my story and why I started a go fund me account. As you can see this was originally started in February when I had my first lengthy stay in the hospital. I'm rewriting again because the struggle continues. I have been diagnosed with SUPERIOR MESENTERIC ARTERY SYNDROME (SMAS). It is a VERY rare digestive disease. Only about 400-500 cases reported. The mortality rate is 33%.......that means 1 in 3. There is NO CURE for my disease. I went from 205lbs last year to 127-131 currently. I'm still continuing to lose. Unfortunately my insurance company will not approve my recent script for increased calories (we are still fighting it). I was seeing a great Dr at CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL OF PHILADELPHIA but, my case became too complex and I am now being treated by a different Dr there that has agreed to take me on. Along with SMAS I have also been diagnosed with Nutcracker Syndrome, that is the compression of the left renal vein between the aorta and Mesenteric Artery. This was just told to us on Sept 5th so I don't even know what that treatment entails. As you can see I have a GJ TUBE. That is how I get my nutrition. I feed through my J because my stomach cannot pass food through so it goes directly to my small intestine. I will NOT let my chronicle illnesses destroy me. I have BIG plans for my future. I'm going to college and WILL become a veterinarian. I will be losing time at school but, most importantly my mom will be losing time at work. Between travel, test, multiple Dr's, and multiple Dr's appointments, and insurance denials, it's financially draining and a huge stress on my family that we don't need. My mom is a single mother of 3 and works full time, she struggles hard to keep our family afloat. I'm scared that we will lose everything she has worked hard for because of my disease and treatments.
