I have 912 students at my school. About 95% of them fall below the poverty line, and 308 of them have Individualized Education Programs where they need extra and different help than that provided in a normal classroom. Some of my students are parents at the age of 16, some of them wear ankle bracelets, 2 have been victims of gun violence this school year, some of them are raising themselves. All of them are “Royal Scholars” - our theme for this school year - and that’s why I call them my kings and queens.

My kings and queens need more. They are vocal about what they want, and about wanting more. They persevere. My students are willing and ready to learn, but they lack the resources to reach their full potential.

I want to be able to show our students the world that is available to them because of technology. Many of them have access to free Wifi in their neighborhoods, but they don’t have a computer at home to use that Wifi. They’re savvy about social media, but I want them to be savvy to how tech is a resource for them and for their futures. Many of them have become calloused because of their circumstances, and I want to open up the world to them, starting with the city of Philadelphia. Access to more technology is the most tangible way to start making these changes.

It is very hard to do that with the resources we currently have. We are functioning on a small number of very outdated Macbooks that crash often, sometimes don’t charge, or are missing chargers completely. Some computers turn on, only for the pinwheel to just spin and spin. We have two computer labs which are reserved only for those who are in the business and graphic design courses. We received a grant last year for 20 Chromebooks, but those are reserved only for African American Studies with our 10th graders. I’ve seen the difference that Google Classroom makes, and I want that for all our students.

We could do a lot with just a 2 to 1 student to Chromebook ratio. Tech is the wave of the future, and my kings and queens deserve that resource. They need it, they want it, and we will help them use it as a resource to change their futures.

Please share this campaign on Facebook and donate if you’re able. Let’s make King’s students not only better students in the classroom, but better students in life.
