My name is Michael Johns and like many others have been horrified by the news from Manchester. Amongst the sad details one story has stood out for me and compelled me to make an effort to help one of our most vulnerable in society who showed great selflessness and courage.

This GoFundMe campaign is for the benefit of Chris Parker, the homeless man who was begging in the foyer of the Manchester Arena when a bomb was detonated and selflessly and heroically ran towards the blast zone to help those affected.

Story as reported by the Guardian...

"A homeless man who rushed into the Manchester Arena to help victims of the attack has told of the moment a woman died in his arms after she was injured in the blast.

Chris Parker, 33, was begging in the foyer of the venue when the bomb went off, killing 22 people and injuring another 59.

He told the Press Association: “Everyone was piling out, all happy and everything else. As people were coming out of the glass doors I heard a bang and within a split second I saw a white flash, then smoke and then I heard screaming.

“It knocked me to the floor and then I got up and instead of running away my gut instinct was to run back and try and help.

“There was people lying on the floor everywhere.

“I saw a little girl. I wrapped her in one of the merchandise T-shirts and I said, ‘Where is your mum and daddy?’ She said, ‘My dad is at work, my mum is up there.’”

Parker said he thought the girl’s mother had died from her injuries.

He also said he had tended to a woman in her 60s with serious leg and head injuries. “She passed away in my arms,” he said. “She was in her 60s and she had been with her family. I haven’t stopped crying. The most shocking part of it is that it was a kids’ concert.”

Parker has slept rough in Manchester for about a year, PA reports. Meanwhile, residents across the city have opened up their homes and offered help to those affected by the attack, using the hashtag #RoomForManchester on social media."

Homelessness in this country is a widespread tragedy but it is absolutely unacceptable that someone who can react so heroically in such a terrifying situation should be on the streets. Hopefully this campaign will go some way to helping Chris off the streets and also show are gratitude for his actions.

Hello everyone,

Today (03/01/2018) Chris appeared at Manchester Crown Court, where he admitted to two counts of theft and one count of fraud in relation to belongings he took from victims on the night of May 22nd 2017.

He is due to be sentenced on 30th January. The judge has told him to expect a custodial sentence.

Whereas I do believe Chris has a right to be rehabilitated and have help to turn his life around, prison would be a waste of time and money otherwise; I also must take in to account the integrity of the donations made.

In the circumstances, it is only appropriate for the fund to be wound up and all donations returned.

I do this without any personal judgement on Chris and with complete respect to the ongoing court proceedings.

Please note it is not possible for me to simply give the money to a victims fund or a homeless charity. This is GoFundMe policy to stop people from starting funds for one cause and subsequently giving to another. It is a rule I fully understand and respect.

If you would like to donate to another cause, please make your own arrangements to do so.

I would like to extend my sympathies to his victims that night and also apologise to them for any distress this campaign may have caused them whilst they continue to recover and grieve.

I would also like to thank those individuals and organisations that helped me over the summer months, before his arrest.

My penultimate thanks goes to those who sent in emails of encouragement and kind words. I didn’t get to reply to all of them but they were all appreciated.

Regardless of the outcome, this was still a fine example of what can be achieved when we refuse to be cowed by those who seek to divide.

The final thanks goes to the 3798 of you who donated.

I will be making no further comment unless there needs to be an update about the refund process.

All the best,
