HealthyVillages, Inc. is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that supports health initiatives in impoverished villages in West Africa.
OUR VISION: People living in poor villages in West Africa are supported in gaining and maintaining good health through infrastructure development in the areas of health services, nutrition, sanitation, and employment.
OUR MISSION: To support good health for residents of underserved villages in West Africa by developing and carrying out comprehensive sustainability plans that include adequate access to healthcare services, sanitation, nutritious food, and employment opportunities.
WHAT IS GOOD HEALTH?Many factors contribute to maintaining good health - access to healthcare services, adequate nutrition, sanitation - and the ability to afford these basic cornerstones of life. If any one of these elements is missing, health is compromised.
WHY SUSTAINABILITY?
A comprehensive plan that addresses each of these elements of good health is so important in poor villages. Each of the elements of a plan working in harmony creates an overall sustainable, self-sufficient existence for villages. Without sustainability, the dire poverty in villages leads to other serious issues. Traditional ways of life are diminished due to young people moving away to find work, the encroachment of unscrupulous foreign companies, and social problems like alcoholism and domestic violence. It's like that old saying, "give a person a fish, and you feed them for a day - teach a person to fish, and you feed them for a lifetime." Healthy Villages' mission is to support the overall health of villages and their inhabitants.
HOW DO WE DO IT?Healthy Villages, Inc. seeks funding for and organizes a variety of projects aimed at supporting village health:Health related missions bring volunteers from developed countries to remote, underserved poor villages to provide direct care to villagers who cannot afford care from local clinics.A variety of ongoing projects address specific needs in villages for infrastructure improvement. Funding comes from a variety of sources - tax-deductible monetary and in-kind donations, grants, and our for-profit business, Batiks for Life.
