READ ON TO FIND OUT ABOUT OUR PROJECTS AND FUNDRAISING EFFORTS FOR ST. STEPHEN CHILDREN'S CENTRE IN UGANDA!

I met Ben in the fall of 2000 when I was volunteering in Makondo village in Uganda, Africa. He was a young man working on the farm where I was living and I sponsored him to complete his studies. With only $1500 in start-up funds, Ben completed a diploma in animal husbandry and a certificate in computer applications, opened a veterinary and a human medicine shop in his village, applied to and was accepted for an agricultural internship in the Netherlands for students from developing countries (having never before left Uganda), and returned to start a non-government organization in his village. Having been an orphan himself with limited resources for education and other basic needs, Ben endeavored to create a centre for the children and underprivileged people in his community.

Now Ben's organization St. Stephen Children's Centre runs a school for over 250 students aged 4 to 14 years and offers various training programs and outreach supports for AIDS-affected and orphaned children and youth, farmers, women, and the elderly. It is registered as a community development organization with Masaka District Local Government in Uganda [Registration number CD 5429].

Together, Ben and his organization have fundraised enough money to build a school. Students from the school collected and carried each individual brick in while volunteers in the community helped to build the two buildings. Fundraising in 2013 helped to build a roof for the school.  Now we are fundraising to complete the remainder of the school, including floors, doors, windows, desks, chairs, electricity, computers, a water harvesting tank, and  a school library.  We are also accepting donations to help pay teacher salaries, provide lunches to underprivileged students ($20 feeds one child for a month), offer training and workshops to community members, and help with income generating projects (e.g., a hen for $8, piglet for $20, or goat for $40 can then be used to sell eggs and milk).

St. Stephen's Children's Centre is single-handedly helping to improve the quality of life of HUNDREDS of people in Ben's community.

Please rally your community to help support his. If everyone can post on Facebook, tweet about it on Twitter, and share this page with people they know, even small donations can make a very real and tremendous difference to the underprivileged people of Makondo. Let's work together to help support St. Stephen Children's Centre!
