$66,531 of $15,000 goal
She is an amazing person, mother, wife, friend and soldier. Would do anything for anyone and would quite literally give you the shirt off of her back if you needed it. When I heard that she was the victim in a home invasion, like you, I was completely devastated. I would like to raise at least $5000 to assist her and their family with any associated costs from this horrifying crime (to include but not limited to: utility bills, child care, travel expenses, home repairs, missed wages and medical bills since she has Tricare Reserve Select and will have out of pocket costs). A majority of this money will be used for medical bills since that will be the biggest cost, including her ambulance ride, surgeries, various doctors that have treated her, medications, stay in ICU and the hospital as well as post-hospital follow up visits to her regular doctor. Unfortunately the doctors (and their bills) do not end once she is released and goes home. My ultimate goal is to cover as much of this as humanly possible.
I have already given Semantha and her family permissions to access this GoFundMe account and she will be making the withdraws herself to prevent money from changing hands. This way it goes directly to her and her family for the above mentioned.
I can't even begin to imagine what they are going through. However, I do know that when a friend, especially a fellow comrade, needs help then you do exactly that. So let's raise the money together and help someone we all love and appreciate.
Forget your Accountant instincts, and justifiable deductibles. She is a Constitutional Defender that just took 2 bullets, at home feeding her family. If you think this is about making sure no-one gets a dime more than the cost of their recovery, then you are the exact person this world can do without. "Do unto others, as you would have others do unto you". and to repeat; GoFundMe, give your 8% fee back to this family.
I don't understand how this could be considered a fraud by some. Yes. She has Tricare Reserve Select. She will have no copay, a $100 deductible, and MAX out-of-pocket expenses of $1000. That being said...she will still miss work and need assistance in paying those bills that DO NOT stop eventhough she is in the hospital. She is the victim here. She stood up to bullies and criminals who violated her home and threatened her and her baby's lives. Stop focusing on the medical bills and help where you can.
It would be nice if for one brief moment some of you stop and think before you type. Or better yet if you have nothing contructive to say then please do us all a favor and keep your opinions to yourself. I am a prior military spouse and I am quite familiar with Tricare and the simple fact is it is really none of anyone's business what insurance this brave young lady has. This page has been set up to help with the cost of A to Z and everything in between. Not to argue about copay's/deductibles and out of pocket maximums. I do not know this family but feel a kinship as all people who have served or supported their military spouses/family feel. There is nothing that ruffles feathers more than naysayers who take a valid sitaution and make it into some kind of deceitful cover up. Support this family and just put yourself in their shoes and think about how you would feel it it happened to you. Just once I would love to meet one of these loud mouth keyboard warriors who quite frankly could not hold a candle to any military personnel or family. Somehow I think your tune would be different if confronted in person. I wish this brave young woman a speedy recovery and peace of mind to her family.
If someone wants to give to this family that has just been through so much...then it is NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS! It doesn't matter how much they raise or what they do with it. If you don't want to give because you think its a scam, THEN DON'T, know one asked you personally. If you are pinching dollars and don't think you have it in your budget, THEN DON"T, I am sure this family will understand. But do not judge them, they did not even ask for this. I believe a friend set this up to help them out, THEY DIDN'T ASK. I am sure begin so young she will not know exactly the cost it will take to get through this tragic experience. Its much more than medical bills.... You have no idea what this would do to you or your situation unless you have faced it yourself so stop judging.
What we salute here, with our donations, has nothing really to do with insurance coverage, or other administrative details which many of the comments address. What we salute here is that now-almost-lost quality of the American character that has resisted evil, that literally saved our world twice in the 20th century, and continues to be the strongest force for good in the world. Even with the current idiots-in-charge. We salute a good and strong woman, who fought instead of submitted, who protected her own, instead of fleeing. Hats off to Samantha Bunce, for the righteous strength of her character. This old doctor admires you, Semantha. God bless.
Hey ZAC HEUSTIS. Ex is FULL active duty army currently he is deployed. Tri-care coverage is CRAP!! You would do well to do your research before you let the CRAP fall from your mouth. I come from a military family. This family will need all & any help they can get for medical, etc. lucky for you these same SCAM artists fight to continue to give us our freedoms including letting asinine people spout off half cocked opinions & idiocy.
I am a retired National Guard Colonel (FYI Fox news just covered this story so I don't think it is a scam) Many have questioned health insurance and yes tricare select reserve will cover almost all of the medical bills, what they will not cover is lost wages due to someone now having to take care of her and the baby etc... I am sure most of us do not plan financially for someone to invade our home and shoot us and threaten our newborn. I am proud of what this young national guardsman (woman) did to protect her and her family. In my opinion there is no better way to serve your community, your state and your nation than belonging to the guard. This young woman joined to serve us and I think can use our help now. This young family will need all the help the can get ...
Zac your'e a idiot you wish you could 1/4 brave as this young lady. She saved her baby and herself.. Even with regular insurance there are still bills at the end, because there are deductibles and not everything is covered under insurance.. Sorry for the name calling, but your a schmuck. Never mind I'm not SORRY!
Why should there be any question as to what the donations are for. A guy makes a account to fund his potatoe salad and he gets tens of thousands no question. A woman is shot during a home invasion and now you want to scrutinize where the money will go. Seems so backwards to me. Good luck in your recovery!
Please stop providing commentary to the ignorant individuals Darwin missed. You can't fix stupid so stop trying. Extremely fortunate soldier to have survived a heinous crime. Motherly instinct combined with military training and a firearm allowed her and her child to survive a terrible day. God bless you and your family Semantha. You have thousands of battles out here watching and praying. Hope the perps get exactly what is coming their way. Stay strong!!!
I'm in complete aww with all of this... Her and her family are in my prayers... She did a courageous thing... Her motherly instincts and her ability to sustain training and react is beyond amazing. As an active duty service member, my heart goes out to the reserves and national guard bc they are only temporary covered. I'm baffled someone would call this scam... The young lady didn't set the GoFund, she probably didn't even know and if your questioning all of this then look up the story before you start slander anything! My deepest apologies to her and her family for some ignorant people. And to Hollie your a sweet person for starting this account! I pray for Semantha's recovery, I pray for her kids to be able to continue an amazing life with their family, and I pray for her husband who had to see this... All of ya'll out there and to her family please check on them and ensure her husband and her kids and signs of PTSD, bc they could develop that. All in my prayers--- Elizabeth
To Mr Zac "know it all" Heustis.... You obviously have ZERO idea how expensive having a family member ill or in the hospital can get... Even IF her insurance covered 100% of medical bills, there will still be MANY MANY other expenses beyond their normal bills... They have 2 children who will now require childcare while mom recovers... Her husband may be unable to work at times due to her condition and lose wages... She will have medical expenses AFTER she leaves the hospital and comes home... She may depending on her injuries require other medical items that insurance will not pay for... Her husband and family will be travelling out and back to the hospital (which even if its close gets expensive)... Her family will most likely not have time to go home and cook so they will have to eat out or eat at the hospital which I promise you is NOT CHEAP at most hospitals... YOU have ZERO right to question a Fund set up by her FRIEND and say the family is asking for a handout!!! YOU are the JOKE!!! No one is making you donate to them and you can do what you want with YOUR $$ and others can do as they wish with theirs... I pray that you're never in a situation where you need HELP like this family!!! If you are, I pray there are people kind enough to help you!!
