Hot Wheels for Roberto's Hot Peanuts

$4,670 of $30,000 goal

Raised by 45 people in 73 months
I am trying to raise $30,000 to buy a used lift-van for a dear friend and neighbor who has ALS, better known as Lou Gehrig's Disease. My name is Kate Manizade, and I live down the block, and have watched this disease attack our friend and neighbor.

His name is Robert Ortiz, he has a wife and three children, and needs this van to get to doctor's appointments and to get out and about using his power-chair. A used Toyota or Honda handicapped-compatible van starts around $30k. Robert didn't ask me to do this, but when I asked him to let me do it, he said "Ok".

Robert Ortiz
Robert is seen here with his wife, children and mother-in-law. As you can see, he has a lot to live for, just as long as he can!

I am also posting a link to a video about him that you can view on Youtube:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWhca8aykUg&list=PLB7B771EBBD3A6D76

This video was made last year by Communications major Jonas Gottlieb at Salisbury University in Salisbury, MD. Since then the disease has advanced to where Robert cannot use his legs.We don't know how much time Robert has left, but the typical ALS victim survives for 2 to 5 years after diagnosis.

Please donate whatever you can spare for this van, and whether or not you can afford to donate money, please donate your prayers that he will be healed of this terrible disease!

Thank you!

Donations keep arriving for Robert. We are now at around $6000, and will keep you posted. This site will keep active even after existing funds have been used to pay for the van Robert has picked out, and I'll keep posting the total amount collected. God bless every one of you, and please keep Robert in your prayers!

This is wonderful! We're now up to nearly $4000, not counting what we will be taking in from the North Salisbury Plaza Tapatia fundraiser last night, and not counting about $1500 given to Robert by caring friends outside the auspices of GoFundMe. I have to go pick up the check and will post the donation this afternoon as coming from the friends and neighbors who turned out last night..and some kind friends have donated in absentia. Altogether Robert has about $5500 to make a healthy down-payment on the lift-van. Thanks so much to all of you saints!

Well, Robert has found a van, a used 2013 lift-van with only one previous owner. It was important to find one that his wife can handle, so it had to be big enough for his family and their gear, but not so big that it couldn't be handled by Amy. So, we finally have a match!

We're now going to empty the piggy bank so he can make a significant down-payment on this van. As this terrible disease advances, he doesn't have time to waste, and the van will bring him some precious hours with his family and friends.

I will keep this account active for any kind souls who may wish to contribute while he is paying down the balance on the van.

Just realize that your gifts mean more to Robert than can be expressed here. He knows they've required a sacrifice from you and thanks you from the bottom of his heart.

And I keep every one of you in my prayers, that God will keep you from every harm, physical, mental, and spiritual, and that He will return your kindnesses a thousand times over!

This is the money raised by donors who attended the fundraiser at Plaza Tapatia on Monday 11/18/13. Ten percent of all receipts generated by Robert's friends and supporters was donated by the kind Management of Plaza Tapatia, plus some additional money was kicked in by people who could not attend AND by people who attended and just added some to their tab! Thanks to all of you! This was a huge success!
