Where do I start? I really hate asking for help, but our situation was unexpected.
2 1/2 years ago, my son Matt and I lost his mother and my wife Vanessa to cancer. At the time we were living near Baltimore, MD. Her illness and continued health expenses left me practically penniless.
About a month later, my grandmother (103 yo) passed away in Hanover, PA...my hometown. My father asked me to move into my grandmother's house, telling me that the house and the property would eventually be mine. He and his wife were quite elderly (in their 80s) and not in the greatest of health. My son and I could help them with everyday chores and assist them financially, since my father's business had not been doing well for a number of years. I agreed to cover the property taxes and to add enough money to help with the upkeep. It was a mutually favorable situation for all concerned. Well...so I thought.
In March of this year (2018), my father passed away. I was told (twice) by the attorney handling his estate that the real estate would be mine after probate, which I remembered to be a fact from the will I had seen. All the other property and contents of his business would be liquidated and given to his widow after probate. This was not the truth.
After gathering the facts the past few weeks, it turns out that my father had a new will made just 2 months after my son and I moved into my grandmother's house. Under pressure from his wife (my step-mother), he was forced to amend the will, making her the executor of all the property. It seems that she was under the impression that my son and I may influence my father somehow...leaving her and her children nothing upon his passing. He was ashamed to confront me with these new circumstances, and I was left not knowing the truth.
The property has been in my family for over 100 years. The house was built by my great-grandfather David Strickler, and the business was started by his son, my grandfather Lawrence Strickler. When my grandmother Effie Strickler passed, it was left to my father, Lorn Strickler. Now, it is to be liquidated so that my father's widow and her children, from a previous marriage, receive all the proceeds. I was informed this week to vacate and that I will receive nothing from the estate.
So much for being respectful and being at her beckoned call. She put up a very good facade.
I have consulted an attorney, and was told that I have very few options. We must leave my our house and find another home for my son Matt, our cat Vinny and myself.
I have been disabled since 2001 and live on my disability allowance and whatever I can muster from writing. My son also has a job, but we have little money in order to suddenly pull up stakes and move. This is why I am asking for your help. Thank you...Lon
