A New Heart for Maria

When you think of true love, it’s hard not to picture Tom and Maria Stramel. Dating since they were 13, Tom and Maria have built an incredibly special and full life, raising three children, six grandchildren (soon to be eight!) and many rescue pups. They were often the house the other neighborhood kids wanted to visit, and they have always been the first to step  up to help others and to do what it takes to make their families and dear friends happy and safe. Now, they need our help. As many of you know, Maria was born with a rare condition called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which means the muscle of the heart is abnormally thick. After many years of complications and a few recent failed procedures to try to strengthen her heart, Maria’s doctors have decided she is in need of a full heart transplant. She is currently struggling to stabilize in the hospital, and as soon as she’s strong enough, both mentally and physically, she will be transferred to University of Chicago to await a heart and undergo the surgery.  At the young age of 57, Maria still has a long life ahead of her, spending time with her husband, children, adoring grandchildren and family who love her so much. A  new heart will make all of this possible. Throughout everything, Tom has been by her side night and day. We are raising money to pay an enormous amont of current and future hospital and care bills, and to ensure Tom can pay all bills due to being unable to work as many hours in order to be with and support Maria. If this were any of us, Tom and Maria’s friends and family, going through a time like this, they would do whatever they could to support. Please consider supporting them in their time of need! Any amount of money helps, and if you aren’t able to give financially, please give with your prayers for strength for them both. Thank you in advance and we love you!

From Tom Stramel:
Hello everyone,
This is Maria's husband Tom. Unfortunately, we lost the battle to get Maria a new heart. She passed away on 5/20/16 very peacefully and with all of her family by her side.
I really need to thank all of you for your thoughts, prayers and support for Maria. All of you are the real angels on Earth. Your support gave us hop that things could get better for her. We were both overwhelmed with the kindness everyone showed us.
Maria was the kindest most loving person I ever met. She touched so many people's lives with her unconditional love.
I was truly blessed to have her in my life. She made my life great and taught me the meaning of true love. She taught our children how to love with all their hearts. I see Maria in all of our children. Her love for all of us will live on forever.
Not only was she an angel on Earth, she was my angel and I must say this:
Dear Lord,
Thank you for letting me take care of Maria until you needed her in Heaven. You gave me a piece of Heaven on Earth.
God bless all of you. I hope you continue to make someone's life a heaven on earth, too.
I love all of you.

p.s. This is for my Sposa:
Please don't worry about our children or our grandchildren. You taught me well.
I got this.
I love you.

From Tom:
Dear friends and family,
Thank you for everything. The support and generosity has been amazing. I never expected it. Heaven gained a new angel this morning. Maria passed peacefully surrounded by her children, her mother, her sisters, and me. My heart is broken but I know she is no longer suffering. She has definitely found her rescue pup, Roscoe, by now.
We love you all,
Tom and the Stramel family

Thank you again for your kind messages, heartfelt prayers and generous donations. As we all sit in the hospital long hours, we truly feel the support and know it's helping us get through. Progress has been slow in the last 24 hours. Maria remains on life support, and the main goal is to get her organs working again after her body went into shock. The ecmo machine is keeping her heart pumping temporarily while her body gains strength and her organs recover. Right now, she is in surgery to examine her heart, her lungs, and to hopefully close up her chest (it was left open after the last surgery). Tom and her kids are in constant communication with the doctors and will continue to make decisions about next steps based on what we think Maria would want. Right now, we still have a glimmer of hope we can get her to a place where a transplant is a possibility. Please pray especially for her amazing & compassionate doctors, the INCREDIBLE nurses who are at her bedside for 12-hour shifts, and for Tom. Maria is his everything. Pray that he continues to have the strength to carry them both through this time, whatever it may bring. <3

Mom made it through the night. She is on full life support right now. Please pray for the doctors who are caring for her, and for Tom, who is waiting for a sign on what to do next, including what Maria would want us to do. Today is a big day.
