Adopt a Classroom at Cornelius Elementary

Donation protected
Thank you to everyone who contributed!  On December 18, 2020, we presented $200 Amazon gift cards to all 31 classroom teachers and $100 amazon gift cards to 11 special area teachers (the remaining dollars were entrusted to the Principal).  Between GoFundMe and donations through the church we raised in excess of $7,300.  Any additional dollars that come in will go to other needs at Cornelius Elementary.  Thanks again!

It all began at the Cornelius Elementary School Open House.  As my wife and I took our three children, Lilly, Emma and Christopher, to meet their teachers for the first time, we came to know that nearly every teacher at CES has an Amazon Wish List for needed supplies in their classroom.

When we got home, my wife and I made the decision that we would “adopt” Lilly’s 1st grade class and provide a $200 Amazon gift card to her teacher.

Then something happened.

I learned that according to the U.S. Department of Education, the average schoolteacher spends $479 out of his or her own pocket annually for classroom supplies.

So, I posed the question to my wife.  “What if we adopted the entire 1st grade?”  “What if, through the church where I am pastor, we could raise enough money to provide a $200 Amazon gift card to each 1st grade teacher?”

And then the vision grew.

“What if, through the community in which we live, we could raise enough money to provide a $200 Amazon gift card for every teacher at Cornelius Elementary?”  “What if we as a church could rally the community to cover the costs that our elementary school teachers pay out of their own pockets?”  And so, our campaign was born.

There are 31 classrooms at Cornelius Elementary School K-5th grade.  If you could help us to raise enough money to provide every teacher with a $200 Amazon gift card, it would be a beautiful testament to the community’s love and appreciation of our elementary schoolteachers.  Our goal is $6,200.

If you can make any individual donation at all, it will get us closer to our goal and you will be blessed. If 31 people would “Adopt a Classroom” by making a $200 donation, we would meet our goal very quickly.  If $200 is more than you can afford, then possibly your Sunday school class or civic group or neighborhood association can pool your funds to “Adopt a Classroom” of your own.

And the vision is growing.

It is my prayer that other churches in other communities will see this campaign as a model for their schools - across the Lake Norman area, across the state and across the country.  Rather than sending our kids door-to-door to sell coupon books and wrapping paper, why not just band together and lovingly provide the funds directly to our teachers who are so deserving of these gifts?  I hope that you agree and are moved to action.

May God bless you and keep you.

Pastor David Judge, First Baptist Church of Cornelius

P.S. Just for your assurance, all funds will be withdrawn by me and our Treasurer, Mrs. Dayna McKinney.  The church requires two persons involved whenever handling donation.
