Katie's Brain Tumor Fight
My name is Katie Ruehl & I am a 32 year old wife, mother of 2 beautiful children, and a 6th grade English teacher at JFK Middle School in Suffolk, VA. In October of this year I went to the doctor for chronic headaches not expecting this outcome. I was diagnosed with a benign brain tumor on my brain stem that requires surgery to remove it. This surgery is risky and to be perfectly honest, I am scared. The surgery may last about 12 hours. It will require 2 entries in my skull and the use of belly fat to reconstruct the cavity. The possible side effects may be facial drooping and deafness in my left ear. The expected hospital stay is 5 -7 days and the recovery time will not allow me to go back to work for the remainder of this school year.
Due to the lengthy recovery time requiring me to miss work and the fact that I have no sick leave left from maternity leave last May, the majority of recovery time will be unpaid. The loss of salary will range between 10,000-15,000 dollars. Therefore, I am starting this campaign to help support my family during this time and to help cover medical costs. This is important to me and my family because it helps me to support my family.
Any help, in any amount, will be appreciated beyond measure. Please pray for me and my family as we go through this journey. I know that this experience will be an opportunity for God to use me as an example of faith, love, and endurance. PS. – My babies are ready to make you a sweet thank you card.
We do FINALLY have a surgery date that is sooner- January 20th. There are no words to show our gratitude as we go through this journey. I cannot wait to be back in good health and truly get back to life.
