Two more families have reached out to us this evening . Currently gathering some info then make deliveries tommorow. The overwhelming support from my friends and co-workers has confirmed for me that all of this is possible on a larger scale.
Ok.. moving on to Case #3 - Single mom, 7 month old baby... just moved here from Alabama, and Alabama is taking her sweet time transfering her assistance records to Florida... the wait for Food Assistance is indefinite, and there is little food in the house... to make things more difficult, the stove is broken, and all she has is a microwave. And guess what... I'm out of food. Need to drum up the food drive or I need donations. $5 from 10 people would buy a weeks worth of food.
I just received this request. If you have any food to donate please contact me.
"PLEASE! If anyone has any food they can give I would be very grateful , I have a 1 year old son and I am 17 weeks pregnant. I have already applied for food stamps it could just take up to 30 days to be approved."
Right now at this very moment people are suffering... there are people just minutes from you that are unable to feed their children, pay their electric bill, buy clothes for a job interview, live daily with no hot water, or sometimes NO running water... many of these people are working, many of these people have children who suffer in poverty and still manage to go to school everyday and they are expected to perform and behave appropriately in their classrooms. The kid sitting next to your kid in science class may have slept in the family car last night because he has no home. Parents are afraid to ask for public assistance because they don't want to lose their children.
Unfortunately, because of circumstances that seem out of control, ... lost jobs, disabilities, unexpected expenses, or just living in a downward spiral, families are waking up to empty cupboards, no heat, no air conditioning, no electricity. Its happening all around you. You never see it unless you're looking for it... I've spent the last year looking for the uncounted, the proud impoverished, the hungry.
NO child in this country should go to bed hungry, no parent should have to tell their child there is no more food. Help me help the people in our community that need to eat, need to work, need help.
Eventually, if I can keep to the task I will incorporate as a non-profit. But for now, the smallest donation will help me secure things like baby formula, cold milk, and other parishable items that are desparately needed by struggling families in this area.
The above examples are REAL. There really is a family in Ft. Walton, two adults and two children 7 and 9 living in thier car. There is really, right now, a woman in Pensacola with a 3 day deadline to pay her electric bill or they will cut off the power, she has a child with cerebal palsy. There is a family that needs a hot water heater, theres a woman in Navarre that doesnt have enough food to make it through next week.
I am also taking local donations of dry goods, clothing, and whatever you have to offer. I have enough space to stock these things and distribute them. In and around Pensacola, if you cannont bring it to me, let me know and I will come to you!
The waiting time for foodstamps can be 5-6 weeks, the waiting time for cash assistance can be 2 months, churches connected to the food bank only distribute once per week. There's a lot of paperwork, there's a lot of time between the panic of an empty cupboard and the help that eventually comes.
This is an immediate need charity. The food you give today, or the donation you make right now, will most likely be distributed tonight. Everything you donate goes to help those in need.
If you are interested in doing something like this in your city or town, I would like to speak with you about starting up a network.
No one will be refused, no questions asked, if you are hungry, you will eat. There is no paperwork. There is no red tape or qualifiers. I dont need to know your name. You ask and you shall receive. You are my Brother, and I am your Keeper.
If you have any questions, please contact me directly.
[Almost two years ago Holly and I woke up one day and realized we were homeless... I was working, and making okay money, but I was in a downward spiral, and lost control of the situation, we lived in a hotel for nearly a month, I was just telling myself it was a transition between rentals, but the nagging truth was there, we had no place to go and I was one paycheck away from living on the street, it was terrifying. I realized then that if it could happen to me, it could happen to anyone. I want to spare people the same experience... and I want to lift up those who have it worse than I did. We swore that when we got ourselves back on track, we would do everything in our power to help those in need and those families who live that same terror daily.]
It's a great thing you are doing, Scott. When I was younger, I found my self in a bad place financially and had it not been for a particular agency that helped me with groceries and paid my gas bill for heat, I would have been in very dire straits. Keep up the good work and keep posting your deeds as a reminder to the rest of us, so we can continue to donate when we can!
