Help Abby Fox Beat Aplastic Anemia

Abby Fox is 15 years old and has been diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia. She is in need of a Bone Marrow Transplant. On September 8, 2016, Abby came home from her third day of sophomore year with what seemed to be a typical cold. She had a fever of 101.5, some chills and just wasn’t feeling well. Within 48 hours she was up and running, feeling like herself and back on the softball field. Later that week she noticed a bruise on her leg and a few days later Petechiae (pinpoint, round red spots) covered her entire body body. Abby was taken immediately to CHOP where they diagnosed her with Aplastic Anemia. It was determined that her body had stopped producing red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets and in reaction to the virus, her body was attacking itself, specifically, her bone marrow. When immunosuppressive therapy failed to help “jump start” her bone marrow, her doctors activated the bone marrow registry.
A match has been found and in just a few weeks (April 21st) Abby will undergo the conditioning needed in order to transplant stem cells. The treatment includes chemotherapy and radiation before the donor’s cells are transplanted. When she comes home from the hospital she will be at high risk for a host of infections including GVHD and her immune system will be almost non-existent leaving her very susceptible to allergens, virus, molds, etc. Abby has been a fighter since the day she was born, she had open heart surgery at 8 weeks old! Despite the long road ahead of her, she has maintained her ever positive attitude and we are certain she will persevere. Her strength is truly amazing and inspiring.
Although there is still a tremendous amount of uncertainty, we know that in the coming months the family will be faced with a variety of expenses not covered by insurance. Her mother Kim is taking a leave from work in order to care for her during this time. I ask that you please donate what you can, so we can assist Abby and Fox family while Abby is undergoing the Bone Marrow Transplant and get her back onto the softball field!
