Friends of Homeless Nepali Children

Donation protected
Dear Friends,

I have drafted this letter to share with you the needs of a group of people in Nepal, who have captured my heart.  They are the thousands of survivors from the massive 2015 earthquake, many of them children, who lost everything in the quake, and still lack adequate housing.  I have been working since shortly after the quake with an amazing  Nepalese humanitarian and small business owner, Prem Rai , who initially organized emergency relief and now tirelessly leads an ongoing relief effort (as money becomes available through donations) to construct modest, solid two-room homes for homeless, displaced survivors.

I traveled to Nepal last November to work briefly on completion of one such home, which I provided for a family of four.  Little did I know, when I set out on that journey, that I would meet and come to love 7 other families in the same village, who were also without adequent shelter.  And now, I am also involved in Prem's current project, where two homes are currently under construction and five more are needed.

Some of you responded to this need last fall with generous contributions, totally $1,500.00.  As those of you, who contributed know, this money was held in the building fund for the next house, waiting for the amount needed to come in.   I recently sent the remainder of monies needed from my personal funds for construction of that home.  It is slated for completion in a few weeks.

Prem's team has also begun construction on another home in the same area with other modest contributions that had come in.   They started the building on faith, hoping for more, so they would be sure to have enough time to finish it before the monsoon.  They still lack sufficient funds, however, to complete this house.  This is such a critical time for families without waterproof shelter, as the torrential rains of the monsoon season are to begin in about a month.

As we all know,  as soon as a more current disaster replaces each calamity in the global news, the long-lasting effects on survivors of each event are quickly forgotten.   That is why I call the dear people, with whom I spent time last November and all of the other children and adults, who survived this tragedy, "the forgotten people".   I am doing what I can to reduce the number of children, who have to sleep on a muddy dirt floor in some form of laced together bamboo or other inadequate shelter;  but I am only one person.

As I initially sought out information on how I can help, I quickly learned about the enormous benefits that can be derived in a developing country like Nepal, from just a small amount of money from developed countries.  It is mind boggling to me, that a modest two-room cider-block and cement home can be built there for $6000 USD.   The amount of money most of us pay for our dwellings seems obscene in comparison.

Please visit the facebook page Friends of  Homeless Napali Children, on which you will find a wealth of information about this cause in the various ALBUMS under PHOTOS.   They contain narrative, as well as photos.  Pictures of the current building projects canalso  be found on this page.

I have created this Go Fund Me site to offer a quick and easy way for anyone, who like I, cannot just sit by,
once you understanding how very much you can help with a relatively small amount of money.    Except for a small GoFundMe administrative fee, 100% of money donated will go directly to the Earthquake Emergency Fund (EEF), in Pokara, Nepal, led by Prem Rai. Information on Prem's ongoing work with these homeless survivors can be found on his website a www.trekwithpremrai.com.

Anyone wishing an alternative method to contribute, to avoid any fees associated with online donating, can mail a check directly to me at my office address at www.drsusancummingsnicholson.com, or can wire a contribution directly to the account listed on Prem’s website under the link EEF Relief Aid.  I am not personally benefiting in any way from contributions made through this site, and all donations made in any form go directly to the EEF Relief Organization, organized through Prem Rai Treks.   I have been working with this man for over a year and can personally guarantee tht all of the money donated goes directly to the children in need.

The majority of contributions that I have made in my lifetime, have been in support of efforts that train and assist people in developing sustainable ways of helping themselves in the long-term.  However, it has always been clear to me that it is often impossible for people to access their own inner resources, until they receive a helping hand from someone else, to help them first find solid footing – most especially when some kind of disaster has swept them off their feet and taken from them even the most basic of needs.  It is my privilege to provide the information herein and the use of this site for all those, who may also want to help or to share the need with their friends, so these precious children and their families do not remain forever forgotten.

Sincerely,
Dr. Susan Cummings Nicholson
