Johnson's Battle w/ cancer

People come in and out of our lives all the time, some meant to stay only for a short while, while others are there for a life time.  Meet Johnson K. Ninan-38 years old, he is one of those people that had a huge impact on my life from the moment I met him.  Two people from different backgrounds, meeting each other and discovering a friendship that would hold true with all of life’s obstacles; in Johnson I found my brother from another mother.  As time would pass, our lives would change; jobs presented themselves that would take one in a different direction; this was true for Johnson.  He took a job in Houston TX, and started a new adventure with his wife Gladcy at his side.  This new adventure was very promising with rewarding benefits, until one day in a blink of an eye life dramatically changes.

For a while Johnson had been having issues with headaches and a pain and he associated it with a pinched nerve.  It wasn’t until one Friday morning earlier this month that he collapsed and had to be rushed to the hospital.  After days of running tests after tests, the diagnosis was in.  Unfortunately, Johnson was diagnosed with a brain cancer called, Astrocytoma Grade III to IV which is located within the medulla region of the brainstem. Due to the location of the tumor, it is inoperable.  Johnson is currently undergoing radiation treatment 5 times a week, for the next 6 weeks, after that time the doctor’s will start Johnson on chemotherapy.

Johnson is such a loving, wonderful, caring individual and the news is devastating to all that know him.  Since diagnosis, he has been admitted a couple of times to MD Anderson due to serious symptoms associated with his illness.  His immune system is low, due to the compromise of his health.  As of right now, he is currently still a patient of MD Anderson, where he is being treated with great care, and trying to keep positive regardless of the road ahead.

My friend is a fighter, but when communicating with him I was able to hear the fears and concerns he so bravely tried to hide underneath his big, tough exterior.   I wanted to share Johnson’s story with everyone in an effort to try and raise funds to help pay for some upcoming medical bills, radiation treatments, chemo treatments, and just any personal financial burden that he may be faced with.  Maybe, even when he is feeling better he may be able to find a way home to Kerala India to be with his family and find comfort, as he faces one of the most fearful diseases known to man.  Most of us know just how much we want our mom or dad close by when we are sick.  There is nothing like a mom’s tender loving care to nurture us when we are ill and there’s nothing like a father’s strength to let us know, we are strong enough to keep fighting.

I want to help my friend be able to alleviate some of the stresses from financial burden and I hope that many of you will find it in your hearts as well to give.  Any donation is greatly appreciated.  May the blessing be returned to your giving hearts 10 times more.

According to Cancer Center.com, “Astrocytomas develop from small, star-shaped cells called astrocytes, and may arise anywhere in the brain or spinal cord. Astrocytomas are the most common primary CNS tumor. In adults, astrocytomas most often occur in the cerebrum, which is the largest part of the brain.

·         Grade III: Anaplastic astrocytoma

·         Grade IV: Glioblastomas (also called glioblastoma multiforme, GBM, or grade IV astrocytoma). Anaplastic astrocytomas and glioblastomas are malignant astrocytomas that grow and spread aggressively, accounting for more than 50 percent of all astrocytomas

·         Brain stem gliomas arise in the brain stem, which controls many vital functions, such as body temperature, blood pressure, breathing, hunger and thirst. The brain stem also serves to transmit all the signals to the body from the brain. The brain stem is in the lowest part of the brain, and connects the brain and spinal cord. Tumors in this area can be difficult to treat. Most brain stem gliomas are high-grade astrocytomas.
